I know what you're thinking, "There is nothing good about this movie! It is complete garbage!" Well I was among the haters of Green Lantern, until I decided to watch it one more time, and honestly, I was surprised by how much I didn't hate it! Of course there are many aspects of this film that are just plain weird. The villains would be my first complaint, any time you turn a cool villain into a cloud it's just lame and it pisses the fans off. *cough Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer* Also the bulbous headed Hector Hammond was a bit much. But there are cool parts to this movie, I promise!
1. Abin Sur
I found that I rather enjoyed the scene where Abin fights off Parallax and then escapes to earth. There were cool visuals for sure, and Abin just looks really good. Also it helps that he was played by the awesome Temuera Morrison who is also known for being a certain bounty hunter... Anyways, good portrayal of an iconic GL character.
Mark Strong is an actor who can act the crap out of any villain role you put him in! (I'm sure he makes a great protagonist too). He's been the villain for Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood, and John Carter to name a few. He did excellent in the role of Sinestro, I mean, he looked the part, he sounded awesome, and he acted the part with that brooding feeling where you know something's gonna snap. The hardest part for me when I watched this movie, was knowing that Mark Strong will (probably) never play him again, and imagining how great a Sinestro Corps War movie would have been with him in it. (He would have made an amazing Lex Luthor I might add...)
3. The Supporting Roles
Although he didn't have much screen time, Michael Clarke Duncan as Kilowag was a great choice. (Rest In Peace MCD) Michael was always a great choice for basically any role though, but I thought he did Kilowag justice from the small amount of time he was shown.
Again, small amount of screen time, but Geoffrey Rush's voice was mesmerizing as the wise, fish-faced Tomar-Re. Another heavy hitter actor, he brought one of the great members of the corps to life. Ya done good Barbosa! (I just realized Abin Sur and Sinestro are also supporting characters...awkward)
4. The Action
I thought that they did well bringing the imaginative side of Hal Jordan to life. He had many cool constructs, such as a mini-gun, a catapult, a chainsaw, swords, jets, and giant green fists of justice! Bringing some of the essential Green Lantern constructs to the big screen was very fun to see. Also the scene shown above where he recites the Green Lantern oath and blasts Parallax away, gave me the chills! Just hearing the oath on screen in such an epic way was pretty fantastic! (See what I did there?) Once again, the giant cloud Parallax and giant head Hector detracted from what could have been a GL fans dream come true. Also the training session with Kilowag and Sinestro was great!
In conclusion, I've just noticed how fans and regular movie goers rip this movie to shreds, some even comparing it to the utter garbage that is Batman and Robin! At least for me, I thought there were some great fan service moments, and the acting was good. I just wish they could have learned from their mistakes and made an amazing sequel with Sinestro as the main villain!!! But alas, it is only a fool's dream. Anyways, these are just my opinions guys and gals, so please be respectful. Thanks for reading!
