The review does contain some spoilers so read at your own risk. I tried to keep as less spoilers as possible and within facts which are known to most of us.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron has released a week before the US release in India, and I was lucky enough to catch the first show on the opening day in 3D. (not IMAX 3D, out of my budget :( ) . The movie is a sequel to the "The Avengers" and continues the storyline from Captain America: The Winter Soldier where S.H.I.E.L.D. is no longer in action.
The movie starts off by showing The Avengers in action in the city of Sokovia, trying to destroy a Hydra base controlled by a thug named Baron Strucker. Strucker had been experimenting the powers of Loki's Scepter on humans. They face Hydra army and two of Strucker's experiments, twins Pietro(Quicksilver) and Wanda(Scarlet Witch). Strucker eventually surrenders and Stark gets Loki's scepter.
Back in Avengers Headquarters, Banner and Stark discovers a trait of a brain within the scepter's gem, an Artificial Intelligence. Stark convinces Banner that this is the way they could create Ultron, a supposedly peacekeeping and global defence program. After initial failures, Ultron does initiate itself and it eliminates J.A.R.V.I.S. and attacks the Avengers during a party hosted at the headquarters. Ultron goes to Strucker's Sovokia base to build himself an army( read clones of himself) of robots and upgrade his body. He hires the Maximoff twins, who hold a grudge against Tony Stark for building the weapons which killed their parents, to extinct the Avengers and get their revenge of Stark. They visit South African arms dealer Ulysses Klaue, to get deposits of Vibranium, where they face The Avengers. Wanda manipulates the minds of the Avengers, by giving them haunting visions and memories from their dreadful past. This causes the Hulk to cause havoc in the city for which Stark has to use the Hulkbuster (Veronica) armor to get him under control.
A worldwide havoc has spread due the Hulk's actions and the fears instilled by Wanda's visions force the Avengers into hiding in Barton's safehouse, where they meet his wife Laura and children, whose existence was only known to Natasha. Thor departs to discuss his vision of an apocalyptic future with Dr. Selvig, whereas Natasha and Banner confess they are attracted to each other and decide to flee together after fighting Ultron. Nick Fury meets Tony in Barton's farm and encourages him to fight Ultron whereas Ultron visits Dr. Helen Cho's lab in Seoul and threatens her to use her synthetic tissue technology to create the perfect body for her. Hawkeye, Black Widow and Captain America sabotage the plan by stealing the synthetic tissue cradle and bringing it to Stark at the cost of Ultron capturing Romanoff.
From there, Thor uses his lightning powers and the powers of the mind gem inside the cradle to reactive the cradle and create "The Vision". Pietro and Wanda, seeing the visions of Ultron to destroy the world, decide to join the Avengers in destroying him whereas Stark re-assembles J.A.R.V.I.S who had hidden in the depths of internet to hide from Ultron. Now whether they succeed and if they do, then how is something you have to pay a visit to the theatre to know.
The movie like the other Marvel movies, had its comic moments like Stark commenting on Barton's wife, "This is an agent" and his children as "These are smaller agents" and they got the comic timings right. What I love about the movie is how it has tried to show the emotional sides of heroes like Hulk and Black Widow. Ultron, Wanda and the Vision manage to bring out the different aspects of the man we call Tony Stark. His darker side, a side of his which is confused about his actions itself, as he repents for putting his world into trouble and his friends into danger of extinction by creating Ultron.
Ultron, like a perfect villain, takes the entire Avengers to an extreme, both physically and mentally. Stark's actions manages to create a huge rift among the Avengers causing a huge difference in opinions but eventually uniting to make a plan, save the civilians of Sokovia and the world to fight and defeat Ultron. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch had important roles to play in the film as they started off as anti-Avengers but eventually realized Ultron planned to destroy the entire World via Wanda's mind reading skills, and sides with the Avengers to help them.
It was nice to finally see Paul Bettany in a role in the franchise as he voiced J.A.R.V.I.S as usual as well as played "The Vision" in the movie.
Last but not the least, that end credit scene of Thanos getting his hands on the Infinity Ward, a perfect build up for the Infinity War Part-I sequel of this movie.
A very entertaining, well paced and nicely scripted movie, Joss Whedon shows off his good directing skills, with the use of good filming locations and fight sequences. The graphic and CGI effects in the film were surreal and amazing which would leave you spellbound provided u watch it in 3D.
P.S. - This is my first ever review on Moviepilot so my sincere apologies if you find it boring.
