DC Entertainment announced Friday that superstar writer/artist Frank Miller would be returning to Batman in the fall of 2015 with the release of Dark Knight III: The Master Race, the third and final installment of Miller's take on Batman that started with 1986's The Dark Knight Returns. I'm probably one of the biggest Frank Miller fans, and certainly one who hasn't joined the Miller-hate bandwagon of late. Frank Miller has been one of the most prolific writers in comics since the 1970s, and has created many characters, themes and stories that persist today. Miller's name has come up a lot recently, mostly in connection with the Netflix Daredevil series as well as the obvious The Dark Knight Returns influence on next year's [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870), and this is understandable because Daredevil and Batman are both the characters that they are today because of Frank Miller.
The above image is from DC Comics' official webpage. Now, whether or not this will actually be the cover art or if it is just a promotional image, hasn't been confirmed. The actual image is from the original Dark Knight Returns, so it is very likely that this is just a promo teaser. Despite what the current opinion of Frank Miller may be, there is no denying that The Dark Knight Returns continues to be one of the most popular graphic novels of all time, and even though there has been plenty of criticism over the second installment, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, I'm sure DK3 will end up being one of the biggest selling titles of 2015, even if people go out and buy it just so they can take to YouTube or websites like this one to rip it to shreds.
The title, The Master Race, really has me intrigued as to what this master race might be. Could it involve a Kryptonian invasion? Or perhaps an uprising of the Mutants? Only time will tell. I will say, however, that I am puzzled by the decision to release the title this year. From a marketing standpoint, I think early next year would be prime for a return to the Dark Knight universe, just because it will serve to tie-in with BvS, as well as it would be a great commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the original Dark Knight Returns. At any rate, I will be awaiting this release with baited breath. All I wanna know is, who's with me?
