The XBOX One and PS4 consoles have gotten a lot of stick since they were released. Both consoles pushed out the usual launch titles, devoid of all manner of innovation, charm, or quality. However, now that we find ourselves over a year into the console race, both consoles have some pretty decent games to sink your teeth into. Microsoft's Xbox One has had an awful time on the main stage though.
The whole team was ridiculed at E3, its resolution is consistently lower than that of the PS4, and its sales haven't been as great as Sony's since the beginning. However, that's not to say that Microsoft haven't got some great games for players to engage with on the Xbox One. Here's our list of the 11 best Xbox One games you've got to buy!
The 11 Best Xbox One Games You've Got to Buy!
Number 11 - Dragon Age: Inquisition
As the months go by, I think less and less about Dragon Age: Inquisition, and to be honest, if Bioware hadn't released the game so late in the year, I doubt it would have won Game of the Year. It has a lot of problems and generally I think that the main villain is so disinteresting, that motivation to kill the guy gradually dwindles as you progress through the campaign. Also there were far too many quests that were just picking things up.
But aside from that, Dragon Age: Inquisition has remarkable writing, engaging characters, a fantastic combat system, and the ability to govern the whole world through your map. There's a lot to do in Bioware's latest epic, and while it's not always as much fun as the original Dragon Age, it's definitely a game that any RPG fan will want to check out on the Xbox One.
Number 10 - Titanfall
There's a lot to admire about Titanfall. I love how this game decided it was going to be a multiplayer, even though it may have reduced its potential market by doing so. It gave us a whole load of great maps to run around in, some insanely cool gameplay mechanics and basically breathed some life into the dull FPS-genre. We've seen the ramifications its had on the industry, just look at Advanced Warfare and now Black Ops 3 (aka Advanced Warfare 2).
Titanfall is still an absolute blast on the Xbox One. The way that players move and are required to change up their tactics to fit with the ever-changing pace of battle is exhilarating. Titanfall 2 will hopefully surpass all of this games achievements, but if you're looking for one of the best exclusive Xbox One and Xbox 360 games, this is one of them.
Number 9 - Far Cry 4
Ubisoft pulled some pretty unforgivable stunts in 2014, however, that being said, you gotta love Far Cry 4. Yes, it's seriously similar to Far Cry 3, and we desperately hope that the formula is changed for the inevitable Far Cry 5, but as it stands, you can't have much more fun on the Xbox One then you can with Far Cry 4. Be it in singleplayer or the game's wondrous multiplayer, there's so much to enjoy in the beautiful, Kyrat.
The game is worth trying out for its animal encounters alone. Seriously, those damned eagles! Even though Far Cry 4 has a pretty lame plot that will undoubtedly leave a lot of you feeling pretty disinterested, it's the game's combat that Ubisoft was always selling and that's where the true joy can be found in Kyrat. A must for the Xbox One for sure!
Number 8 - Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition
Diablo 3 is an absolute sensation. My god, this game is fantastic. Blizzard spent a great deal of time on porting this to the Xbox One and PS4, and it's remarkable how well the game works on consoles. With the game running at 60FPS on Xbox One, this is a truly beautiful way to engage with one of my personal favourites of Blizzard's.
The Ultimate Evil edition of Diablo 3 incorporates the Reaper of Souls DLC for the game and effectively melds it into the main campaign. It's a great game on PC, but if you're a fan of the Diablo franchise, you should check out how well this title runs on the Xbox One.
Number 7 - Minecraft
Minecraft is truly a sensation. It's incredible to see how this game has built up (ha...ha...) its reputation since its partial release in 2009. Minecraft is a sandbox independent video game originally created by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson and later developed and published by the Swedish company Mojang. And boy is it amazing.
The Xbox One Edition includes larger worlds, expanded multiplayer features (such as the addition of multiplayer servers like in PC Minecraft), and enhancements offered by the Xbox One. It remains one of the most addictive games in the industry and basically life-consuming. The Xbox One is lucky to have it, and it's undoubtedly one of the best games on the current gen console.
Number 6 - Forza Horizon 2
Forza Horizon 2 is undoubtedly one of the best driving games I've played in a long time, and is by far the best driving game on both the Xbox One and PS4. With stunning graphics, an umpteen amount of cars and customisation options, coupled with great music and a fantastic open world, Forza Horizon 2 is not only a great driving game, but one of the best games on the Xbox One. Period.
If you're a fan of driving games, you owe it to yourself to buy this game and test its engine. What a joy!
Number 5 - Ori and the Blind Forest
Heartbreak. Within 15 minutes of gameplay - heartbreak. Ori and the Blind Forest may not be the most challenging platformer ever made, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful. The art design of Ori is breathtaking. You'll travel to lava covered forests and deep waters, you'll fly through the air and use your enemies to blast you into the sky, all the while engaging in a moving story of loss and acceptance with a marvellous score. Even the villain in this game will make you emotional!
There are some seriously great mechanics in Ori and the Blind Forest - they'll have you flying through levels with elegant ease as you come ever closer to its conclusion. It's one of the best games on the Xbox One and totally worth its cheap price!
Number 4 - Shadow of Mordor
I love when a game can surprise you. After having been witness to J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth be the location for so many bad games, you start to lose hope for a great new entry. But suddenly, along comes Shadow of Mordor. With its visceral combat and fantastic Nemesis system, this was undoubtedly one of the best games of 2014. And it was a Lord of the Rings game - Amazing!
If you haven't ventured into the lands of Mordor, then your Xbox One will be a lonely one. This is one of the best games that the console has at the moment and arguably the best of 2014. You've got to check it out!
Number 3 - The Master Chief Collection
The problems this game has had since its release date have been truly appalling. It seems that Microsoft really wanted to push this collection out before it had time to be completely finished with. It's clear that this game needed an additional few months of testing and development in order for its 4 multiplayer games to function properly. However, now the game is working the way it was supposed to on launch.
The Master Chief Collection gifts Halo fans the entire collection on the Xbox One, and probably the greatest thing about it is the ability to swap between the old graphics of both Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 at the push of a button. Halo 2 looks amazing at 60 FPS and so do the rest of the campaigns. Now that multiplayer is also fixed, you can relive the days of Halo on the Xbox One, virtually issue-free. A must buy on the Xbox One for sure.
Number 2 - Sunset Overdrive
I can't believe how much I enjoyed Sunset Overdrive, and I paid it absolutely no attention prior to its launch. Now, it's actually the best exclusive title that the Xbox One has and a good enough reason to try out the console ahead of the likes of Halo 5, Gears of War 4 and the Marcus Fenix Collection.
It took me some getting used to at the outset of the title, but after you figure out the basics of navigation, you'll be able to jump around this city without ever touching the ground. Sunset Overdrive is the best game that was released for the Xbox One, let's hope that the console's future only gets better.
Number 1 - GTA V
GTA V is an absolute masterpiece. There's little else that can be said about it. It's one of the best games of our generation and it's going to go down in history. Whether you're a fan of its wacky story, its open world, or its incredible online mode, GTA V has everything you could possibly want. Rockstar have made an incredible game and with FP mode, and the ability to fly around as an eagle on the Xbox One, what more could you possible want on next gen?
Be sure to let us know in the comments if you agree with the list, and whether you have your own ideas of what the best games for the Xbox One are, that players just have to buy!
