Well it has finally been confirmed. In a report today, actor Daniel Bruhl announced that he will be playing Baron Zemo in [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409). Months back it was reported that The Rush actor would be joining the third Captain America movie, and he would be portraying the villain. To no surprise, Bruhl will be portraying Baron Zemo; or more accurately Bruhl will be playing Baron Helmut Zemo. Helmut Zemo is the second character to hold the mantle of Baron Zemo, and he has remained the primary Zemo since the 70's. With Helmut being my favorite of the two Zemos, I have no problem with this character interpreted for Civil War. However though it great to see Zemo a part of the MCU, the question I am wondering is where does Zemo fit in Captain America 3?
Let me start off by saying that I am all for Zemo being the antagonist for the next Captain America film. In The First Avenger, we saw Captain America's arch nemesis the Red Skull as the main antagonist. Then in [Captain America: The Winter Soldier](tag:254973), we saw Captain America's more notable enemies (as well as storyline) come to to the big screen. So when thinking of which villain should appear next for Captain America's films, Baron Zemo was the only character that made any sense; though I am still wondering how this characterization will work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So Baron Zemo being the villain for the third Captain America film made sense; but this next film is not just a Captain America movie.
As we all know, Captain America: Civil War will bring one of Marvel's most notable story-line to the silver screen. The plot of Civil War deals with Marvel heroes battling one another; with Captain America leading one side and the other side being led by Iron Man. This idea was definitely solidified last November when Robert Downey Jr confirmed that he would appear in Civil War. Since then it has been confirmed that other characters would be appearing the movie; such as Black Widow, Falcon, Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch (which I just fount out). Plus Chadwick Boseman will making his Marvel debut as Black Panther; and let's not forget about the appearance from Spider-Man. So needless to say Civil War has a stacked cast and the movie certainly has a lot of ground to cover. So where exactly does the likes of Baron Zemo fit into a blockbuster like Captain America: Civil War?
I am still working on a concrete theory, but I have a few ideas of how Civil War can handle Zemo. Perhaps the good Baron now runs Hydra which leads to Captain America and Iron Man leading their teams to stop Zemo; only for them to but heads which then leads to war. Then again maybe Zemo will manipulate the film's circumstances which then leads to Capt and Iron Man battling one another. However, there is something that Zemo is known for in the comics. Zemo has led supervillains teams in the past; such as the Masters of Evil and the Thunderbolts. Could Zemo be putting together his own team? Frank Grillo confirmed that he would be returning as Crossbones, so perhaps he will be Zemo's first recruit. If Marvel is going in the direction Zemo forming a team of supervillains, then his involvement in Civil War certainly has gravity to it.
There are plenty of directions for Marvel to use Zemo, but right now it is hard for me to figure out what the studio will do with him (hopefully I will have a better idea later this week). However for the moment, I am glad that Baron Zemo has been confirmed for Captain America: Civil War; and hopefully even with this massive ensemble, Zemo will be a memorable villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
