Hey DC fans! I had a date with the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel! I’m talking about the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice IMAX event, and it was amazing! Before you keep reading, I should say that I went to this event as a filmmaker, film fan, and superhero nut in mind. This event and the film is really special for me because you might remember; in a past article I wrote, I shared the experience being an extra in the film it’s self! Now on to the main event!
As you know we had gotten the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice teaser trailer from Warner Bros. right after the teaser had been leaked on the web. Even with that, the anticipation for this event was huge! Zack Snyder generously posted on his twitter that people who decided to wait for the teaser would still get an IMAX screening of the teaser with a few rewards to take home afterwards. A few hours after the announcement for this event, the website was taken down due to the immediate theatre fill up!
So now let's talk about the actual presentation of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in IMAX. Before the footage started playing, Director Zack Snyder came on screen, standing in front of the new Bat-mobile, and thanked us for coming to the event. Then he had the footage roll. What we saw was the teaser that was released online. But this event included extra shots that were exclusive for the audience; which presented Batman and Superman very angry at each other, ending with both titans running into each other and colliding right before the feature cut to black. The feature ended with a text on screen displaying "Experience It In IMAX 3D"; which I will definitely be doing. I was really impressed with the extra footage. It actually took a lot of my worries about the film away, something the original teaser sort of did first. After the footage was screened, Snyder talked about the use of IMAX shots that they filmed with the native IMAX cameras and told us look out for them the second time they played the sizzle and he pointed and that a lot of the film was shot in IMAX and the film will be presented in true IMAX theaters the way it was meant to be seen. Then we saw the teaser again with an uproar of cheering we contributed to the ending. The event ended with a #BatmanvSuperman on the screen as we walked out; while taking home two exclusive IMAX posters for the film. One of each featured the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel respectively.
The element that was the most important and gratifying for me was seeing the IMAX shot scenes on the “TRUE” eight story tall IMAX screen. For those who may not know, a standard film will still have the anamorphic widescreen bars on the IMAX screen; making the film standard and a smaller size. But when a scene is shot with a native IMAX camera, the entire IMAX screen is filled with the world you are watching. The eight story tall screen becomes a window into the world you are watching, in this case Gotham/Metropolis. I am a huge supporter of IMAX as a filmmaker; in fact it is the only format I watch films in when they are released in IMAX, and I will try my hardest to get one of my films shot on the IMAX format.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is cinematic history. It is the first time that Batman and Superman will be together on screen in a live action representation; and from the footage we saw, the presentation was just as one would imagine it would be. The footage looks like it was taken strait out of Frank Miller's graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns", which a famous story line that introduced the "Batman vs. Superman" storyline; and partially what the film’s plot is based on. The Bat-suit looks as if it was taken strait from the story too; especially the white Bat-eyes. Zack Snyder knew, that we've been reading those books for a long time and we would get nit-picky about things; and I was feeling like if "you show me the white Bat-eyes, I will follow you to hell”. The footage, the acting, and the heroes themselves looked incredible. The film is going to be a giant at the cinemas!
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will set up the DC Cinematic Universe that will lead into Justice League Pt. 1; which Snyder will also direct. So there they were, Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) charging at each other in true native IMAX format. And when I see a shot in IMAX, I must be honest with you; I get so immersed in the world, as it is meant for you to be. But honestly I might get more immersed than the average Joe because I love it so much. If ever I get my chance to direct or edit on IMAX, I would take such care of my shots because I would want my future audience to have experience of the IMAX expanded scene just as I have my entire life. There is no better satisfaction to me after finishing a picture to see people watching and reacting to a story I came up with or I'm just simply involved with.
Thanks to the advanced screening ticket I got from Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder, I will get to see the film a week early with all of the other lucky fans that a filmmakers, film buffs, or just plain comic book/superhero fans!
I want to know what you guys think! Were you one of the lucky audience members that got to experience the event as I did? If so, what did you think of the extra footage and the event as a whole? Do you have any comments you’d like to add about the event? Or were you a fan that wanted to attend the event and couldn’t make it to your IMAX theatre? Or if you hadn’t heard about this event at all, what did you think of the event description? Whatever you think; comment below, let me know!
