On April 22nd, it was announced that Warner Bros had won the film rights to The Selection, the first book in a series by Kiera Cass. Black List writer Katie Lovejoy is set to adapt and DiNovi Pictures’ Denise DiNovi and Alison Greenspan are producing along with Pouya Shahbazian.
If you don't know, The Selection is a young adult dystopian romance following America, a girl who's entered in a competition to become the next princess of Illéa and win Prince Maxon's heart. Sounds like a dream come true, but for America it's far from it. There's a boy back home who has her heart but because Aspen is near the bottom of the caste system it would not be wise for them to be together. He begs America to take this opportunity for a better life to which her mother also persists and so she ends up being selected and travels to the palace along with 34 other girls.
This is very exciting news for fans of The Selection series, especially seeming there have been two other attempts at bringing this series to life. In 2012, the CW had optioned the series planning on turning it into a television show staring Aimee Teegarden (Friday Night Lights, Star Crossed), Ethan Peck (10 Things I Hate About You), and William Moseley (The Chronicles of Narnia, The Royals) as America, Maxon, and Aspen respectively. The pilot was not picked up for series.
But no fear, the CW were determined to make this work so they went back and reworked the script and recast the show, this time with the leads being Yael Grobglas (Reign, Jane The Virgin), Michael Malarkey (The Vampire Diaries) and Lucien Laviscount (Scream Queens). Now when this initially happened I remember hearing they wanted to make it closer to the book than the first try had been...well, it was nothing like the book besides characters names and some plot points. We all thank the gods that that one was also not picked up. If you're interested you can read the script for this one here. There are also some scenes from the pilot floating around somewhere on the Internet.
For the last few years there had been no word on what was happening with The Selection until a week ago. Now that there is once again hope for this series to make it to the big screen we can all do what we do best...fangirl and plan out those dream casts.
Aimee Teegarden: Now I was actually pretty happy when I learned she was going to be playing America in the first pilot. I've seen her in a few things and I thought she'd do a good job at portraying America's personality and she's just cute and adorable. When I'm reading the books the America in my mind does take form after Aimee.
Sophie Turner: It's gifs and pictures like these that make me want her to be America. Girl is gorgeous and just seems like a lot of fun. I would love to see more of her and America is a completely different character than Sophie's role as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones. It'd be interesting to see.
Daniel Sharman: It's my love for him that makes me want him cast in every single thing I ever watch. I stumbled across the idea of him as Maxon on tumblr and from there it just spread. But I mean look at that face, this gif embodies everything I love about Maxon. He's my cute little precious baby.
Callan McAuliffe: Okay, I really didn't have another idea for Maxon but I stumbled across this picture on google and I'm down. I loved him in I Am Number Four, like immediately. I would absolutely love to see him in more stuff.
Lets be real...I don't like Aspen so I really don't have a fancast and really, probably won't care who plays him. Just give me some good eye candy for him and maybe I'll warm up to him a tad.
