The Last of Us has a rather remarkable following in the video game community, especially considering the short period of time that we've been able to enjoy it for. But we all know why, we've all experienced the power behind Naughty Dog's masterpiece, and we can't wait to see what else they have in store following Uncharted 4's release date in 2016.
The Last of Us 2 could go in many directions. We could see it become a prequel, and explore the life of the fireflies and the uprising. We could see Joel live long enough to become the villain. We could even see the game focus on none of the characters that we're familiar with as it moves off to another location within the universe. Maybe even Europe! But would you be disappointed, would it really feel like The Last of Us 2 if Naughty Dog didn't have Joel or Ellie in the game on release date?
The Last of Us 2 Without Joel or Ellie
The Last of Us was formed with the characters of Joel and Ellie in mind before the whole world was created. They are an integral element to the game and naturally characters that a lot of us have bonded with for hours upon hours. We'd love to see how their story continues in this hostile world, but I really don't want to see that ending affected. The way that The Last of Us concluded was pure perfection and I'd hate to see that tampered with by a sequel that picked up from that moment.
Yet naturally I understand the desire to have The Last of Us 2 focus on these characters once more. They were so well realised and written, and the performances from the actors that played them were stellar. But as Woody Allen says at the conclusion of Manhattan: "I don't want that thing I like about you to change." I'd hate to see the power of this game tampered with by further exploration into these characters in a similar setting in The Last of Us 2.
But this is why I'm asking. I'd love to know what all of you think about having Joel and Ellie return in The Last of Us 2 on PS4. What situations would you like to see them in? Should the game pick up immediately after the events of The Last of Us, or should Naughty Dog find a more creative way of exploring their characters even further? Let us know what you'd like to see in the comments!
