About 2 years ago, there was a plan between two men who were friends(and enemies at times) to save the world. A Avengers team was formed with the sole purpose of making sure that they did not lose. Sacrifices were made and the ultimate betrayal happened as one friend was forced to mindwipe the other friend to prevent his interference. Now, we are at the final chapter and time has run out. But, the heroes continue to fight the good fight because they refuse to give up. The bad part is, they knew all along there was no winning this battle. So, instead of focusing on how to win this fight, they should have been focusing on how not to lose. And that, is how the story ends. Not with a whimper, but with two friends fighting as the world crumbles around them.

Johnathan Hickman has does a fantastic job of taking all the loose ends that has been present in the Avengers books over the last few months and merging them together into two comics. One, the New Avengers issue that came out this week displayed the reasoning for the incursions and Doom's involvement in the overall destruction. This issue displayed the war that is coming when the final incursion is about to happen. The art shows all the emotion and terror that is occuring. But, as the dust settles, all we see are two old friends fighting among the wreckage of a doomed world. In 8 hours, time will run out for Earth. Some heroes will choose to spend those hours with their loved ones, while others will choose to spend them tying up all loose ends. The highlight of the issue involves the constant reminders of how Captain America and Iron Man worked together for so long to create the Avengers machine and also to show how they always were willing to work together. But, the giant lie of Tony has been discovered, and Steve Rogers can't accept that Tony's ego got in the way of Captain America possibly saving just a few extra lives. This is not a final issue as the event will continue this coming week in the pages of Secret Wars, and this issue truly wets the appetite for that giant event. Where New Avengers #33 failed, this issue succeeded and I give it a 9 out of 10.
