With the summer winding down it is time faithful readers to put down the video games and come out of the shadows to actually get some work done and bring you the next installment of Who & Ted's Comic Market Watch!
A lot has happen the year, This dog got a little older and a little wiser, and little more cynical about the world. But through all that one thing that I've learned is focus on the positive while working to correct the negative.
With the lack of Agents of SHIELD & Agent Carter I can understand if anyone is feeling a little withdrawal. Luckily their new Dubsmash war has been keeping us fans entertained during their production break and development of the new season.
Now let's get to business!
These are the shows and movies you have to be thinking about right now when it comes to collecting your comics. Please bear in mind that we are focusing on books related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe primarily with any others mentioned for good reason.
Avengers Age of Ultron is still floating in the air with the upcoming Blue Ray release, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, & Daredevil are gearing up for their next season's and Jessica Jones & Luke Cage will be making their premiere. Ant-Man is still filling up theaters on the weekends and Captain America Civil War debuted its first footage at D23 while Doctor Strange concept art has also come to light. Somewhere in the background the Infinity War, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Thor, and the Inhumans are all floating around. And in the center of all that is Spider-Man.
So now that you've been brought up to speed you can see that there is a bleep ton of comics out there that you can bet are going to get a market boost simply because they are in some way attached to the film. It is a great time to be collecting comics but it is also a great time to remind oneself that like any other market you don't always get what you paid for so exercise caution when wheeling and dealing in the back alleys of shops.
It's a good time to sell your Age of Ultron related comics as well as a good time to buy. The movie was a big impact on 2015 and still lingering in the minds of others. The big hype and explosion of the comic is mostly over but there are plenty of people still searching for a decent title at a decent price. Sometimes you can still score the occasion mid grade nobody happens to bid on and sometimes you catch the buyer willing to pay the price.
On the other hand, Fantastic Four has really taken a hit since the release of the Fox adaptation (which was no surprise). I get the sense that you will find a lot of people dumping their collections. I would recommend to the patient collector it's a good time to get some silver age issues for cheap but you'll have to sit on them for who knows how long before they get the proper Marvel treatment. Only specific issues that contain MCU related characters are making a rise.
AGENTS OF SHIELD
Agents of SHIELD is getting ready to begin production on Season 3 and with the introduction of the Inhumans, a plethora of new heroes and villains is at our fingertips. Daisy/Skye might be heading up the Caterpillars, a group of powered agents, Coulson needs a hand but May's on vacation and Simmons could be stuck in the Sea of Dirac. A good starting point could be Secret Warriors #1 which is the first appearance of the Caterpillars. Once the show gets going we'll get some more hints as to where to look for comics. Keeps your eyes and ears open during production for any spoiler announcements!
As for Agent Carter the move to the west coast has already brought the paparazzi out! Sources have already confirmed that Madam Masque will be the season 2 villain so an old favorite has popped up again on our radar. Already responsible for the introduction of the Iron Man 2's villain Whiplash, Tales of Suspense #97 is also the first appearance of Madam Masque. This makes this comic a double whammy so be sure to get it before people catch on. And when and if Madam Masque turns out to be a fan favorite, you might have an even harder time finding this silver age gem!
Bronze Age Daredevil specifically the Frank Miller run has now increased in value. The Punisher related titles in NM that were once unsellable for $9 are now being listed at a $35 average.
Kraven the Hunter related Silver Age Spider Man. The Internet rumors are swirling about Kraven being the main villain for the new MCU Spider Man but time and only God Fiege will tell. If the first appearance issues are out of your price range try going after the later appearances specifically the early Romita works. And some of the Kraven covers are simply Marvelous. Also Amazing Spider-Man always can sell for double so it's still a great investment even if Kraven is not the main villain.
JESSICA JONES & LUKE CAGE
I picked up Alias #1 the first appearance of Jessica Jones but I missed out on Luke Cage #1 & Daredevil #4. Though later Silver Age Daredevil is still affordable, I can't imagine that lasting long once season 2 of the live action series hits Netflix. Two issues still flying under the radar are Alias #24 the first Modern Age Purple Man, a darker comic that may get more attention for its controversial nature.
I also made sure to pick up Powerman #19 the first appearance of Cotton Mouth, the recently announced main villain for the Luke Cage solo Netflix series. Not to be confused with Cottonmouth, Captain America's nemesis from the Serpent Society....or is it...
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
James Gunn who is known for being very engaging on social media especially with fans. Recently came out of his writing cocoon and emerged with the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy 2. During a quick impromptu question answer session on his Facebook, it went unnoticed by many that Gunn may have dropped a nice bit of news. When a fan jokingly mentions that he eagerly awaits the Thanoscopter, Gunn responds by saying that the Thanoscopter is in GotG2! Take it with a grain a salt or not, but personally I am taking it as a hint to jump on Spidey Super Stories #39. The comic itself is a rare find, and if it turns out to be true about it's appearance in the new Guardians film you can bet hardcore collectors will drive the price up.
Captain America Civil War hype is just starting to bubble up and one comic that stood out to me was Captain America 168 -First Helmut Zemo. As soon as it became official that Helmut Zemo was Civil War's villain, I recommended to you faithful readers to pick it up in the previous update. Now prices are starting to rise!
