Hey there Pilots! Tomorrow, another EPIC episode of Game of Thrones will air, and I gotta say I am TOTALLY ADDICTED to this freaking show! I've been watching regularly since Season 3, when I finally gave in to the pleas of my friends, and now I just can't get enough! From the massive battles to the intertwining stories; from amazing landscapes to unforgettable plot arcs; Game of Thrones has a TON of awesome elements going for it, but for me, the most important and excellent component is the characters. There are DOZENS of named characters, but only six can get into my Top List, so without further ado, LET'S GET GOING! Oh, and as per usual,
I will be spewing MASSIVE SPOILERS from the latest episodes, and before, so you'd best be caught up with the show before you read this! YOU WERE WARNED!
#6: Ser Barristan Selmy
Of all the knights in Westeros, one man has the honor of having won the most single combats of anyone currently alive in the show, and that man is Ser Barristan Selmy, former Kingsguard and Queensguard to Robert Baratheon, Aerys Targaryen, Joffrey Baratheon, and finally Daenerys Targaryen. He's not just a killer swordsman though! Barristan is a wise a noble man who fulfills his sworn duties no matter where they may take them, even if such quests lead him out of his home country and across the Narrow Sea. He DOES NOT take shit from upstart kings, he knows HOW TO PROTECT those in his charge, and when he meets his untimely demise at the hands of the Sons of the Harpy, he FUCKS THEM UP ON THE WAY OUT! This is no ordinary knight; Ser Barristan lived and died as a true badass, and that's why he gets the first slot on this list. It was SOOOO hard to narrow down my top picks, so let's continue before I change my mind!
#5: Sandor Clegane A.K.A. The Hound
From Lannister banner man to Kingsguard, from kidnapper to guardian, Sandor Clegane has had a number of occupations, some more honorable than others, but honor is the furthest thing from this dangerous killer. The Hound is one of the most feared men is Westeros, and for good reason. He's killed countless men, he's completely ruthless, going so far as to kill a child on the order of Prince (Soon-to-be-King) Joffrey, and if he's hungry, DON'T FUCK WITH HIM! The man is deadly with his hands or a sword, but he's also a reluctant protector when the situation calls for it. The Hound became one of my favorite characters over the course of Seasons 3 and 4 as he keeps trying to escort Arya Stark to her surviving family members. He remains badass even until the end, and his final battle against Brienne of Tarth showcases that BRUTALITY very clearly. It seems that all my favorite characters are doomed to die... Let's see if I have ANY on this list who aren't departed! (Not likely. If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.)
#4: Tywin Lannister
When it comes to family patriarchs, there are few as devoted and unrelenting as Tywin Lannister. Ever since his powerful entry in Season 1, Tywin has displayed his absolute obsession with the Lannister dynasty and the steps he will take to ensure its survival. He is a cunning strategist and the father of arguably the three most powerful people in Westeros, as well as the leader of the current King's family, and he has done everything to get them there, from waging wars to manipulating state affairs and disposing of political enemies. He's the mastermind behind the infamous RED WEDDING, where Robb, Catelyn, and Talisa Stark were brutally massacred along with their men. He's also the smartest and most powerful man in the Seven Kingdoms. The real reason why I adore this character, however, is because of how he MAN-HANDLES KING JOFFREY. In the end, though, he died by the hand of his own son, with whom he shared lifelong mutual hatred. A SHITTY WAY to go indeed.
#3: Prince Oberyn Martell
There are TONS of awesome characters in the world of Game of Thrones, but when it comes to sheer awesomeness, The Red Viper of Dorne is pretty damn near the top of the list! This bisexual orgy-partaking vengeance-fueled beast is the epitome of passionate living, and everything about him screams "FREEEEEEDOM". Oberyn's sister and her children were murdered before the events of the show by one of Tywin Lannister's men, and Oberyn comes to King's Landing in Season 4 to take his sweet revenge. From there, we are treated to some pretty epic moments, RIGHT FROM THE GET-GO all the way to his LONG-AWAITED DUEL with Gregor Clegane, The Mountain. He also wins my award for "Most Insane Death" AND "Most Ironic Dying Statement". ("Today is not the day I die") Oberyn was certainly a fan-favorite for good reason, and it's too bad he ended up like a smashed watermelon. Oh well, at least his Inigo Montoya impression is spot-on!
#2: Lord Commander Jon Snow
The recently elected Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, Jon Snow is a complicated man. He is the bastard son of the late Lord Eddard Stark, and went off to serve at The Wall at the beginning of the series. From there, he was immediately taken on as a steward of the former Lord Commander Jeor Mormont (Jorah's dad!), and has since led expeditions beyond The Wall, fought the Wildlings on numerous occasions (And fell in love with a beautiful red-head Wildling named Ygritte), and became a respected warrior in his own right. Jon is honorable like his father, and he is a favorite of mine because he is flawed, and yet always manages to do the right thing. He also KICKS ASS against TRAITORS and FREEFOLK alike! Being that he's still alive as of Season 5 Episode 4, I'm expecting great things from this son of ice. So far, we haven't been disappointed! So if not Jon Snow, WHO could be Number One?!
I'll tell ya who's NOT Number One, the Honorable Mentions!
#1: Tyrion Lannister (OF COURSE!)
Of all the wonderful actors to grace the presence of Game of Thrones, I think Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, disgraced son of Tywin Lannister, takes the cake! Not to mention the character himself, who is a total badass at every point in the show. Tyrion is one of the very few characters who I loved watching in every scene he was in. There are so many great Tyrion moments, but THIS display of brazen badassery is epic, only matched by the SEQUEL to that event. Did I mention he likes to WRECK KING JOFFREY and his KINGSGUARD on a regular basis?! Yeah, I think I'm not alone when I say how awesome Tyrion is. Now, his misadventures across the Narrow Sea with his captor Lord Friendzone (Okay, okay, his name is Jorah Mormont) is in the center of my attention and I CAN'T WAIT for more witty banter and quick-thinking from the "Half-man", as he is sometimes called. Well played, Peter Dinklage, well played.
That's all she wrote, folks, so thanks for reading! Who's your favorite character in this crazy show? Whose death made you the most heartbroken? Don't forget to check out my profile for other SIIIIICK content, and as always, have a KILLER day! Muhuhahaha!
