In the wake of Avengers: Age of Ultron being released, I decided to answer a question that may have crept up upon some of you during those annoying weeks waiting for the movie; What if DC assembled the Avengers? Who would make up the team? What would they call themselves? Would Man-Hunter finally get a break?? Fear not true believers, Stan the man is here to help! (Stan said no, guess you guys are stuck with me)

Captain America - Guardian

Everyone knows Steve Rogers. He wields an indestructible shield, is an exceptional athlete and combatant, served in the US army and sticks up for the little guy. (Also, I have to mention that awesome Harley he owns!)
Well, meet Jim Harper. Jim wields an unbreakable shield, is an exceptional gymnast and hand to hand combatant, served in the US police force and took on the codename "Guardian" to stick up for the people who society overlooks. (Did I mention he owns a motorcycle which he uses regularly?)
Fun fact: Jack Kirby is the co-creator of both Captain America and Guardian.

Iron Man - Blue Beetle

Everyone's favourite eccentric billionaire and playboy Tony Stark's Iron Man armour grants him flight, enhanced strength, repulsor tech and well it's a suit of armour. Plus he inherited the legacy of a billionaire; his dad, Howard. He's just got to be unique right?
Wrong. Although Tony Stark was based on Bruce Wayne, the third incarnation of the "Blue Beetle" (Jaime Reyes) is based off of Iron Man. He wields an alien suit which grants him the power of flight, enhances his strength, allows limb transformation into blasters and well, it's basically an alien suit of armour. (Oh and the previous Blue Beetle persona was billionaire Ted Kord. Go figure right?)

Thor - Shazam

Basically Thor is a mythological being with the ability to fly and control the forces of thunder and lightning. Basically Shazam is exactly that. They are both also super strong and their respective arch-enemy is a being from their own mythological continuity. For Thor it's his brother Loki. For Shazam it's his predecessor Teth Adam (or Black Adam). They are both also the respective protectors of humankind in their continuities. (Did I mention they tend to be very cocky?)
Fun fact: Shazam was known as Captain Marvel until DC's New 52 (2011). This lead to copyright issues with Marvel, so they had to title his series "Shazam!", the word he uses to transform into his heroic counterpart. He's actually a 12 year old orphan named Billy Batson.

The Hulk - Solomon Grundy

A hulking (geddit? No? Moving on) figure from the mystic recesses of the DC universe, Solomon Grundy is one hell of a force to be reckoned with. The undead corpse of a 19th century merchant from Gotham and a gamma rage beast from Harlem, how in the world are they similar you ask? Well let me tell you!
In addition to being near invulvenarable, increased healing and hulkish (geddit? C'MON) strength, these two brutes were also originally the same colour! The Hulk was supposed to be grey but a problem while printing gave him his now iconic green look.
Fun fact: Grundy named himself after a poem he heard after reawakening. His real name was Cyrus Gold. He was also one of the first mainstream zombies!

Black Widow - Black Canary

What do these gorgeous heroes have in common other than being named after black animals? Well, they both heavily rely on their athleticism and combat capabilities and they also have some very originally named signature moves; Widow has the "Widow's sting" and Canary has the "Canary cry". (Told you the names were creative)
Jokes aside, the biggest factor that held sway when choosing Canary is her link to our next hero, the archer. Both of these busty badasses tend to have a very close connection to the archer of their specific teams. Widow and Hawk-Eye are BFF's (lovers at one point in the comics) and Laurel marries Ollie! (Sorry Olicity fans, but hey Felicity Smoak marries *spoiler alert* Ronnie Raymond [Firestorm] in the comics)

Hawk-Eye - Green Arrow

This one is pretty much a given. Both are archers. Both use lots of trick shots and both brood more than Christian Bale in live action. Honestly this choice doesn't warrant much explanation so I'll leave you guys with this badass picture:

So to sum up, meet: The Retaliators!

A.R.G.U.S. controlled protectors of mankind led by the valiant Guardian
