Finally saw [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](tag:293035) this weekend and while I was pleased overall, I have to admit that I was disappointed in how Natasha was characterized. I don't want to say she was relegated to a typical female love interest role, but yeah.. she kinda was. All her badassdom was revealed in the trailers and most of the rest of her story was fluff. Even down to becoming a damsel in distress that needed rescuing from a real freaking dungeon in a real freaking castle. I have a theory though on just why Marvel is trying to separate her from the fans and it has everything to do with Hawkeye.

Clint Barton was arguably the best characterization of the film. After his terrible abuse in the last film, it was only right to show the fans how awesome he can be. He was witty, charming and despite having only a bow and arrow kept up the butt kicking all throughout the film. We were even introduced to his lovely wife and 3 beautiful children. Therein lies the rub.

Laura Barton and the Barton kiddies never existed in the mainstream Marvel Universe. They were a creation for the Ultimate universe Hawkeye. But here's the issue. The Barton family was assassinated and no just by anyone. They were killed by a traitor on the Ultimates team, which is they call the Avengers in that universe. That traitor was none other than Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow. Clint was then taken and tortured for operational secrets on the team resulting in the team receiving a severe beat-down.

So do they..

Now I'm sure Natasha isn't working for the same folks. In fact, I doubt she's working for anyone but the Avengers, but I think that will all change in the [Marvel: Civil War](tag:2346746). Natasha thinks of herself as a monster just as irredeemable as Hulk. What better way to prove it than to turn back to her monstrous ways. She will probably end up hunting down Superheroes and taking down the ones who refuse to comply. Who knows? We may even end up seeing that Ultimate Universe storyline play out in the movies.
