As Geoff Johns has been doing throughout his writing career, he has shown that planning and getting ideas across for epic storylines is always needed. He also knows that he needs to wet the readers appetite for his mega-events. He did it with "the Sinestro Corps wars" and again with "Blackest Night" and recently with "Flashpoint". In all 3 epics, he set the stage and explained the characters in great detail before the true action can begin. In this instance, he started this storyline during "Forever Evil" and let us stew on the mystery for months. But now, the time has come and we are in the start of a massive war that could potentially destroy the entire multiverse.
As Johns brings about the key characters, he finds a way to do it in a massively worded issue that sometimes fails. But, in this example, it hits on all the key points and still finds a way to have a cliffhanger that keeps us waiting. All that is missing is the actual Justice League, who only appear in this issue in either flashback panels or just in name alone. In addition, this issue makes old-time readers happy because it finds a way to discuss the pre-new 52 world and all the times that the DC universe has been revamped, which leads us to believe that it might happen again by the end of the storyline. All characters that will be integral to this storyline are present, from Metron meeting with both Darkseid and the Anti-monitor to discuss how to stop a war before it happens, to the shocking character at the very end who will ensure that the war will happen and everyone will pay the price. This issue also includes a number of different artists to bring about the storyline, and that sometimes takes away from the storyline, but in this case Kevin Maguire, Phil Jimenez, Dan Jurgens, Jerry Ordway, Scott Kollins, Jason Fabok, Jim Lee all bring their A-game in a perfectly organized and unified front. The only tragedy is that DC is so stuck in the middle of "Convergence" to bring attention to this upcoming storyline, but that will be changed very soon. I am looking forward to this upcoming war. I give this issue a 9 out of 10. It truly is a great time to be a Justice League fan.
