Happy "May the 4th be with you" to you rebels, storm troopers, and young and old Jedi Knights. In recognition of the...holiday, I compiled a list of my top, debatable I'm sure, 10 moments in Star Wars history that stand out in my memory as awesome or vintage scenes. I probably can pick a million scenes from these movies, but I'll settle for 10.
10. The opening line, title, and story crawl.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away... STAR WARS. A Star Wars movie wouldn't be complete without it. Can you imagine what these movies would be like if they didn't have that unique detail? I can't, that is why it is here. It captures you from the very beginning, nothing says pay attention like a the booming title and the scrolling prologue to the chapter. This truly defines Star Wars and no other... unless you want to count Spaceballs. Okay and Spaceballs.
9. Luke and Leia swing to freedom. (Episode IV: A New Hope)
A scene that was execute in not one, but two movies, Luke and Leia swing though was small in scale, it was a huge classic scene in the franchise. They actually did that scene themselves, nailed on the first take. It was awesomely recaptured in Return of the Jedi. It screamed "Hey, you remember this scene from episode IV?" I did.
8. X-Wing fighters enters the Death Star (Episode IV: A New Hope)
This is beyond a classic scene. With a very articulate model, they made us believe what you saw was massive and real. It looked like the coolest ride in the world, you almost wish it was a roller coaster. Star Tours is as close as you are going to get. This is easily one of my favorites sequences.
7. Obi Wan vs. Vader (Episode IV A New Hope)
The first lightsaber battle had to be recognized for it being unique to the sci fi genre. We get at least one duel via lightsaber per movie which is awesome. But more than that, this scene propels Luke in the direction of becoming a Jedi Knight. Seeing Obi Wan getting struck down still gets me down, especially after the not so perfect earlier episodes, but you feel his sacrifices he has made for the greater good and it is a more powerful moment.
6. Luke goes off on Daddy V (Episode VI: Return of the Jedi)
Having a more experienced Luke rematch an aging, more emotionally compromised Darth Vader isn't the battle we probably wanted, but it was interesting seeing Luke get an upper hand on Vader. Since the prequels, the scene where Luke yells "NEVER!!!" and gives his father the business holds more weight now. It is that moment that the Emperor has won again. This is where we started feeling sorry for Vader, he was almost about to be replaced by his son.
5. Yoda (Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back)
The great master Yoda, there isn't a specific scene I could truly choose, because I love all of Yoda... Except the one in episode I, I don't know who the hell that was. His goofiness in The Empire Strikes Back was great, even though it was deception to hide his true identity from Luke, it was nice to see him make the transition after testing the young knight's patience. He was that wise grandpa you always wanted, but way cooler. He could lift heavy stuff...n stuff. And backwards talk...forgot to mention you thought?
4. The Emperor attacks Luke, Father comes to the rescue. (Episode VI: Return of the Jedi)
The Emperor is a piece of work. The moment he realizes he can't convert the younger Skywalker, he was trying to off him... and do it in front of his father of all things. Evil bastard! Vader watched his son get torn apart until he couldn't take it anymore. He saved his son, sacrificing his own life. It is quite an emotional moment.
3. Luke vs. Vader (Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back)
This was an epic scene, the stage was set, the players were in place, and rest is history. The darkness of this scene matched the movie perfectly. From the first strike, we knew we were in for a treat. Luke was clearly outmatched, but he showed some glimmers of greatness. When it came down to it, Pops was just too strong. A real intense moment in the Star Wars franchise that is truly unforgettable.
2. I Love you, I know, and the Carbonite.
Yeah, this was about as emotional as it gets. Leia confides her love for Han with "I love you", his heart breaking says "I know", knowing that he won't be around to partake in it. It is really gut wrenching for all the Han fans, but as we all know, his carbonite prison was not permanent.
1. (Drum roll) Luke, I am your Baby Daddy, of course! (Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back)
This was the whammy of all whammy's. Who wrote this stuff?! It was a great shock, especially after Luke losing his hand, no one saw that coming either. What a turn of events. It was worse possible news for child, the most baddest bad guy in the galaxy is your dad. Wow, therapy, for life. Number 1 with a twist of fate.
