Recently it was announced that " The Fantastic Four" director Josh Trank has departed the second "Star Wars Anthology" movie that is set to release in 2018. We had no idea what this movie actually is other than it will be a separate story from the new trilogy. Now we might have an idea.
It looks like the standalone film will center around fan favorite character, Boba Fett. TheWrap reports that the 2018 film will be an origin story for the character. The report also said the following.
"The film is set in a separate movie universe that is not associated with " [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](tag:711158)" or upcoming Episodes VIII & IX."
Boba Fett, despite how much the fans love him, never had a big role in the film universe. He was introduced on the big screen in 1980 in "The Empire Strikes Back" and met his demise in the following film "The Return Of The Jedi" by falling into the Sarlaac pit. In the extended universe or now "Star Wars Legends", Fett escaped the beast by fighting his way out.
We next saw the character in "Attack Of The Clones" in which he is a child being raised by his father Jango Fett. Here we learn that Boba is actually a clone of Jango, one of many bred as the Republics new army, but Jango kept Boba to raise as a son. In that film Boba witnesses the death of his father at the hands of Jedi Master Mace Windu.
Director Josh Trank made this statement when he officially left the project;
“After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities,”
Personally, I am very excited to see this movie because of my adoration for the character, but I do NOT want this to be an origin story. I want this to just tell a story from Fett's journey's around the galaxy, I don't want to see him become the character as that will take away a lot of the mystery about him in Episodes V & VI. Boba Fett is best known for delivering a Carbonite frozen Han Solo to Jabba the Hutt.
There is a lot of speculation that Max Von Sydow will be playing an aged Boba Fett in "The Force Awakens" which I think would be fascinating, to see what this character did after he escaped the Sarlaac pit, which might now be canon because we do see him in the new trailer for "Star Wars Battlefront" which is set after Episode VI.
My opinion is still not completely formed on Josh Trank as a filmmakers, I thought "Chronicle" was fine, but I am very excited to see "Fantastic Four" later this year, so I can't imagine what his take on Boba Fett would be. I think the choice of director for a Boba Fett movie is more important than the actor playing him. So I'd be very interested to see what director they get now that Trank has abandoned ship.
As for casting, Disney could go the easy route and cast Temuera Morrison who played Jango Fett in "Attack Of The Clones" and also voiced Boba Fett in the special editions of the Original Trilogy, replacing original actor Jeremy Bulloch. It would certainly make sense appearance wise as Boba is a clone of Jango.
I'm really happy with this news if it does turn out to be true, other than the origin story aspect. Fett is definitely a character I want to see more of in the Star Wars Universe, but what about you guys. Do you like the idea of a Boba Fett standalone? Let me know in the comments below!
