In a recent interview with a reporter from Collider at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Tom Hardy had the following to say:
Collider: I heard Warner Bros. has a few more superhero movies, maybe one or two that they’re developing [Laughs].
HARDY: I want The Punisher… I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something…I don’t know what I want.
You as Punisher could be very interesting.
HARDY: I’m not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9” [Laughs].
But I actually think that adds to the character.
HARDY: Frank Castle, I would love it. Is that him, isn’t it?
Yeah. It’s Frank Castle.
Now we all know that Hardy had to bow out of Suicide Squad due to "scheduling conflicts", however, we didn't know his passion to eventually be in a comic book movie of some kind, let alone the Punisher! Frank Castle was brought to life on the big screen previously by Dolph Lundgren in 1989's The Punisher, Thomas Jane in 2004's The Punisher (and in 2012's Dirty Laundry short), and Ray Stevenson in 2008's Punisher: War Zone.
The Lundgren and Jane versions were not well received (even though we think Tom Jane did a great job as Frank Castle) and Steveson's version was slightly better received yet too over the top. We have yet to see the Punisher done properly. Tom Hardy while not the biggest man to possibly play Castle, sure makes up for it in the intimidation factor and ruthlessness he can bring to characters (see 2008's Bronson).
With the rise of Daredevil on Netflix the time seems right to begin working on a Punisher series that could run along side Daredevil as a sort of flip side to his optimism of by the book justice and Castle's shoot first justice. Hardy may be too big of a star for the show, but we've seen top tier actors do tv shows (Kevin Spacey in House of Cards, Robin Williams in The Crazy Ones, and Hugh Jackman in Viva Laughlin to name a few), so it's not out of the realm of possibility.
So who knows, but as far as we're concerned Hardy would be a great choice to fill Frank Castle's skull shirt.
