I think it is fair to say that serial killers are monstrous people. They commit violent acts that are beyond the comprehension of the vast majority of people.

It varies from killer to killer who their victims are: what age group, gender, race. It also differs from killer to killer what they like to keep from their victims as gruesome trophies, allowing them to relive the crime they committed.

Imagine being a victim, walking unsuspectedly into a house of horror, or the first police officer arriving at the crime scene, and coming across these killers' perverted collections of souvenirs.

Be aware this is NSFW and contains extremely graphic images of mutilation, dead bodies and other assorted disturbing images that are not suitable for the easily squeamish.

5. Dennis Nilsen

One of Britain's most prolific serial killers, former police officer Dennis Nilsen strangled and killed 15 young men and boys, and kept their rotting corpses under his floorboards because "he was lonely."

First he would strangle his victim before bathing and dressing them. Partial to a bit of necrophilia, Nilsen would keep his victims under his floor so that he could perform sex acts on himself while watching over them, or even just lie with them to watch TV.

When the time came for him to dispose of the bodies, he would dismember them and boil them in his kitchen, pictured above. The pan shown is the pan he used to boil the flesh of each young man. He would then either burn his victims in bonfires, or hack them up and flush their remains down the toilet.

It was flushing flesh down the toilet that lead to him being caught. The pipes became blocked, and when a local plumber came to fix the problem he sent a sample of what he found to be tested.

The results came back: it was human flesh. Nilsen's apartment was raided, and there the police found bags on human remains, boiled and hacked to pieces. His previous back yard was also searched, where more fragments of bone were found.

4. Jerome Brudos

Known as 'The Lust Killer,' Jerome had a deadly obsession for women's shoes and underwear that would lead him down a dark and murderous path.

When he was born, his mother did nothing to hide her disappointment, as she had longed for a little girl. He began his shoe fetish at the age of five, when he found some high heeled shoes in a local junkyard.

When he married, he demanded that his new young bride do the housework in nothing but heels. He then started to collect shoes, underwear, and eventually victims in a garage he would not let anyone else have access too.

His first victim, Linda Slawson, he kidnapped from a department store parking lot and forced her to model underwear for him. He then murdered her by hanging her from a hook on his ceiling. He then had sex with her body and kept her left foot to model his shoe collection.

When his garage was discovered, police found his collection of shoes, photographs and underwear, as well as two human breasts he kept as paperweights.

3. John Edward Burrows

Known as the 'Internet's first serial killer' John Robinson lured his victims to their deaths using BDSM chat rooms.

Using the name 'Slavemaster,' he would scour the chatrooms looking for women who wanted to be a complete submissive in life, and during sex.

Women who associated themselves with Robinson would often disappear. It came to the point that police became aware that he was linked to several missing women and began to investigate him.

In June 2000, a woman filed a sexual battery complaint against him, and accused him of stealing her sex toys. This was all the police needed to get the search warrant they wanted.

On Robinson's farm near La Cygne, Kansas, the police discovered his "collection."

Stuffed into 85-pound chemical drums were the bodies of two decaying women, Izabela Lewicka and Suzette Trouten. Searching his other properties, they also found three similar drums containing a further three victims.

All had been killed in the same way, by blows to the head with a blunt instrument, and he kept them all the same way too.

2. Jeffrey Dahmer

Murdering, dismembering, and feasting upon his victims, Dahmer is renowned for his heinous, blood curdling crimes.

Brutally murdering 17 young men, he then had sex with their dead bodies and dismembered them. Keeping them in his house, and fridge to be consumed later.

1. Ed Gein

The inspiration for pretty much every classic horror character, Ed Gein takes the depravity crown when it comes to what police found in his home.

After hardware store owner Bernice Worden disappeared, the last sale she had made had been to Gein. When police searched his home they found her severely mutilated body.

Further investigation uncovered a disgusting amount of 'home made' items.

Gein admitted to robbing several graves, and using the skin to make things for himself. This included belts made of nipples, lampshades made of skin, and even a whole body suit made from the skin of others to wear.

One character that was inspired by Ed Gein is Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. Take a look at one of his more infamous scenes in the movie:

What was found in these serial killers houses just goes to show how twisted and perverted the human mind can become. And when a person has dark fantasies to fulfill, sometimes they will stop at nothing to get what they want.
