"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh, people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future [for our children]."
Please tell me you remember these glorious words uttered by then 18-year-old Caitlin Upton, Miss Teen South Carolina during the Miss Teen USA Pageant. Not Kate Upton, as I've also made that mistake before.
For days I was saying "such as this" and "such as that." I couldn't help it. It was just such an adorable fumble that just happened to be caught on TV for millions to see.
Back in 2007...
In case you need a refresher, check out this clip below:
Poor thing just froze up, and kept talking. My heart goes out to her, as it's definitely happened to us all.
Thankfully, Upton was able to redeem herself when she appeared on The Today Show, where she gave a more coherent answer.
Upton handled all this attention like a calm and cool professional, humbly laughing at herself, reminding us that we are all human and that we all make mistakes.
It can be quite difficult to answer questions on the fly during beauty pageants, but it's been nearly eight years, and a lot has changed for Upton since that cute slip-up.
Post Pageant Muddle
Upton has modeled for companies like Nautica and Wrangler, as well as in magazines such as Seventeen, Cosmo Girl, and American Cheerleader.
She also attended the Appalachian State University in North Carolina before moving to Los Angeles to pursue modeling.
In 2010, Upton and her boyfriend Brent Horne appeared in Season 16 of CBS's Amazing Race. After finishing in third place, Upton visited some of the Asian countries she mentioned during the infamous question.
And who says life doesn't come full circle.
What is Upton "up to" Now?
Upton is now a real estate agent for Keller Williams in Brentwood, California, as stated on her LinkedIn account.
Also, according to Upton's Twitter, she goes by the name Caite and is currently engaged to Chuck McNeil as of March. Congratulations Caite!
Caite is an example of a completely poised woman who was caught in a pinch and had no problem laughing at herself with the rest of the world.
Perhaps we can all learn to lighten up a little bit.
