(Warning - thar be SPOILERS relating to the ending of Avengers: Age of Ultron below, so tread carefully if you've not yet seen it)
If there's one thing the folks at Marvel are great at (other than movies, comics, merchandising and general 'being-awesome'-related activities), it's breaking huge news in a way that completely distracts everyone from whatever else they're doing.
Now, sometimes that's in the form of mysterious announcements, which turn out to reveal entire Phase's of their Cinematic Universe, and other times it's in the guise of a straightforward announcement that Benedict freakin' Cumberbatch (or similar) is joining the MCU. On occasion, though, they hide some of their biggest and most far-reaching announcements within what seem fairly dull and everyday press releases.
Like, for instance, the recent announcement that Captain America: Civil War has begun filming down in Atlanta, GA, which also just so happened to include:
A Butt-Load of Huge Reveals About Civil War
Yup, that's right.
In a seemingly dry, dull description of the movie's plot and cast, Marvel just revealed that:
General 'Thunderbolt' Ross is Back!
Yup, that's right, buried amid the announcement of the movie's main supporting cast...
"The film also includes outstanding additional cast, including Chadwick Boseman (“42,” “Get on Up”) as T’Challa/Black Panther, Emily VanCamp (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Revenge”) as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Bourne Ultimatum”), Frank Grillo (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Warrior”) as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, William Hurt (“A History of Violence,” Marvel’s “The Incredible Hulk”) as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross and Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”)."
...Is the fact that we will soon be seeing William Hurt reprise his role as Thunderbolt Ross, last seen way back in 2008's The Incredible Hulk.
Ant-Man is Joining the Avengers!
Yup, as Marvel put it:
"After his debut in Marvel’s “Ant-Man” on July 17, 2015, Paul Rudd (“Ant-Man,” ”Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues”) will make his first appearance alongside the Avengers as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in “Captain America: Civil War.”"
Suggesting that Rudd's Ant-Man really will be joining the team in Civil War - and potentially beyond...
That, though, isn't all:
There'll Be a Whole Lot of Avengers in The Mix
Including both War Machine and The Vision, alongside the previously announced Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, Falcon, Hawkeye and Nick Fury. Which suggests we really are going to see the newly assembled Avengers team from the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron find themselves in conflict with one another...
And, Of Course, There's a Whole Lot of Plot
"“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain."
Which very much seems to confirm that Baron Zemo will indeed be the movie's main villain, as well as that the movie will essentially be Avengers 2.5, as rumored.
What do you reckon, though?
