Captain America 3: Civil War continues to make headlines this week. Then again with Age of Ultron in theaters, it comes to no surprise that Marvel's 2016 blockbuster is making news. The film has begun its principal photography in Atlanta. With the movie starting its development, Marvel has brought some details to light; particularly in its cast. While fans and moviegoers have known that Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and a handful of Avengers would be returning for this film, the press release has added more characters to this ever growing ensemble. Several of these characters are reprisals, but these are additions are surprising to say the least. Here are the additions that stood out to me in [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409)'s casting announcement.
With Ant-Man heading to theaters this July, you can be sure that many are wondering about how this character will affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, while it does come off as a spoiler, it seems Ant-Man's appearance is not just for one film. Paul Rudd will reprise his role as Scott Lang in Captain America 3. There is no word on what his role will be in the movie. Yet with this announcement, it is comforting to know that Ant-Man will get stand along side characters such as Captain America and Iron Man. Still I wonder if other characters from Ant-Man will make an appearance in the third Captain America film (*cough Wasp cough*).
General Thunderbolt Ross
This one certainly got my attention. It has been revealed that William Hurt will reprise his role as General Ross. We have not seen Ross since 2008's Incredible Hulk. I cannot help but wonder what Thunderbolt Ross has been doing since his encounter with the Hulk; or what kind of a role he will play in this movie. It is likely that General Ross will just have a brief appearance in Civil War. Then again, maybe Marvel has other plans for Ross and we could be seeing a different kind of Hulk. I realize that is unlikely, but you never know. Whatever Ross will be doing in Captain America 3: Civil War, it still interesting to see this character return and that the Hulk cast is being represented.
Alright this casting is not surprising. Sebastian Stan had been confirmed to reprise his role as The Winter Soldier since the start of this movie's development. However that was before the film was announced to be Civil War. When the announcement was made, it was hard for me to see Winter Soldier play any role in this upcoming movie. However, it turns out that we will see Bucky in the third installment to Captain America. It will be difficult to see where Winter Soldier fits into this massive blockbuster. Will he be searching for answer or will he be fighting along side Captain America? It is hard to tell at this time. Nevertheless, it is good to see that the Winter Soldier has not been forgotten.
(SPOILERS) At the end of [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](tag:293035), we saw that War Machine was among the new recruits to Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I could not help but wonder if this team would be making an appearance in Civil War. I knew that both Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) were set to return, but what of the other members? Well it seems Capt's Avengers will be in action in Captain America 3 and Don Cheadle will once again play James Rhodes aka War Machine. Seeing Rhodey in Age of Ultron was great, but now I wonder what will become of the character in this 2016 film. With the movie dealing with Captain America and Iron Man at odds, it will be interesting to see if War Machine sides with his leader or his friend. Needless to say War Machine does bring an interesting dynamic to this movie.
Vision was among the highlights in Avengers: Age of Ultron (which is saying something). I was hoping that Vision's next appearance would not be a long one, and thankfully it is not. Vision was been cast in Captain America: Civil War; and of course Paul Bettany returns to play the android. Until more details are revealed, I do not see Vision having a big role in Civil War like he did in Age of Ultron. However, Vision not having a huge role in this film would not bother me at all. As long as the Vision has screen time, I will be pleased.
Then there is Spider-Man. For months now, people have known that Spider-Man would be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the Wall Crawler's first appearance was going to in Captain America 3: Civil War. However, everyone's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man was not a part of this announcement. In fact there was no indication of Spider-Man's presence in Civil War. So what does this mean? Did Marvel decide to leave Spider-Man out of the film so they can introduce him his 2017 film? It may appear that way, but I do not think we should count out an appearance from the Web Slinger. This is Marvel we are talking about and even with all these characters, I am sure there will be some surprises in the cast. That being said, I think the reason that Spider-Man was not mentioned in this report was for the sake of another announcement. Marvel is narrowing down who will be playing Peter Parker; not to mention they are looking at directors for Marvel's Spider-Man; which is said to be revealed in the coming weeks. So with this announcement, I think Marvel decided to hold off Spider-Man's role for another day. While I think Spider-Man's role in Civil War is not a major one, I would count out seeing the character in this 2016 blockbuster.
Whether or not there are more characters to be added to this film, there is no denying the magnitude of this ensemble. I could never imagine this cast could get as it is, but this announcement has certainly proved me wrong. Then again I suppose when adapting Civil War to the silver screen, you will need to have several characters in action. In the end, it seems that Captain America: Civil War is really Avengers 2.5; and with that in mind, I can only say that it is getting more difficult not to be excited for Captain America 3.
