Alright guys, it's getting to be about that time. I'm sure many of us have seen this coming for a while, and we shouldn't be too surprised, but Hugh Jackman will be officially putting his Wolverine claws and cigar into retirement after the third Wolverine movie.
While my rational mind says Good for him! He gave us a lot of good years and a great portrayal of the superhero, my heart says NOOOOO!
On the Dr. OZ Show Hugh Jackman told the host that after 17 years (by the time the movie is released) he's ready to move on with his career and leave the iconic X-Men character behind:
It is my last time. It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it.
Jackman might not have thought it would last, but in my young, ridiculous head, I did see him playing Wolverine for...well, forever. The man has been playing Logan since the first X-Men back in 2000, so for many of us, Hugh Jackman is Wolverine! Just look at how young Hugh looked when he first auditioned for the role in 1999:
In case you've forgotten just how long Hugh Jackman has been Wolverine, check out this list of 30 things that have happened since he was cast. It includes some pretty unbelievable things, including the launch of Wikipedia and the first episode of CSI.
At the moment, the fate of Wolverine in his final, Hugh Jackman-state is still unclear, but I'm interested to see how his character continues to develop and where he leaves off.
Jackman has an idea of where he wants the story to go, and what he has planned sounds like the perfect exit after nearly two decades of work:
I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.
Don't worry everyone, we'll get through this together.
Since he has yet to be seen on set, we're still awaiting confirmation regarding whether Jackman will appear in the next movie in the X-Men franchise, [X-Men: Apocalypse](tag:1194267), which will hit theaters on May 27, 2016.
Wolverine 3 is set to be released in 2017.
