"it was me... It was me". As much as I try to repeat it to myself, I just can't get around to confessing it in person.
All we wanted was ... we just wanted to help - not kick start the apocalypse. There's nothing we can do but try with a fool's hope to find a cure or possibly a vaccine. The only reason I push on is to keep my word to Candace.... Even she was dedicated to find a cure well after her death. Knowing that this video log will outlive me, our only hope is that whoever you are, that the right people get a hold of this and take the information and all my data to beat this infection on the world. We cannot give up.
As I said before, it was never our intentions to spread this disease; just a giant, chaotic mishap. I was dedicating much of my time researching a way to retard the rate of brain deterioration in dementia patients. Another of my colleagues here at the CDC was making headway in keeping the brain alive in brain dead patients. Well, I mean, the brain would actually remain alive and active but not for long Dr. Edwards had worked with an oncologist here in Atlanta and served in several other hospitals so he was very good at thinking outside of box. He approached me to team up and use our combined findings for a mutual benefit. We approached my wife, Dr. Candace Jenner, on the proposal of merging the programs and that we'd begin with Dr. Edwards' research. We hypothesized that we could keep the brain from deteriorating, giving it a greater chance for survival and an even bigger probability of reviving an individual who has gone into a vegetated state. With that, Dr. Edwards' technique would allow for the brain to operate the vital systems of the body. What we had a trouble developing was a method of successfully transferring the treatment. Normally we would go with intravenous injections or with pills but in medicine there are many methods of providing treatment and cures. One method is through fecal bacteriotherapy where healthy fecal bacteria is added to a patient suffering from CDI. The idea came to us to provide a bacteria that could transfer the treatment. The only problem was that bacterial infections could be cured, but a virus cannot. We attempted treatment with both.
After 7 months of testing and triple checking our work, we were much too eager to bring our findings to Washington, D.C. At first, Candace wanted us to host a video conference, but we received an invitation to Capitol Hill, and so our minds were made up. We brought 11 with us not including me and Dr. Edwards. These were young ambitious doctors. Many weren't even 30 yet... Oh, Dr. Sang... she became Patient Zero. We didn't know then she was infected. We were used to her suffering from allergies so it was common to see her under the weather. We didn't know until we were on the plane that she had a low grade fever. I guess nothing else matters. I guess that's where it all began.
As the story goes, she was dealing with one of our test subjects. We had six we were currently treating and they were all waking up. What was told to me by
Dr. Edwards is that Dr. Sang was running some vitals on the patients when one of them got up on his feet. Everyone there was excited to see a 19 year-old man who had been in a vegetated state for at least 3 months begin to walk. She had her arms out like a mom seeing her baby walk for the first time but then when the man lunged at her, her arms went up in a defensive manner. She was bitten on the left forearm. At that time, we had no idea that the bite would have caused this sickness... the turning is a better description.
How I wish we’d have known. We did the presentation without her because her fever got so high. We left her alone in the hotel to get some rest but, knowing now what truly occurred, she passed away and the infection became active starting up her vital systems and motor skills: She searched for food, became attracted to various stimuli, and started walked and breathing. She bit the house keeper that came in. The housekeeper called security. She began biting them and then the cops got involved. She bit one their fingers off and that got her a felony charge. The cops reacted per their training but they truly didn’t understand what they were fighting and what would follow. None of us were there to say, “That’s our friend, she’s a walking corpse, she has no heartbeat, and you can’t stop her unless you shoot her in the head. Oh and all of you are now infected.” We just didn't have that knowledge of what this was!
Eventually, well after the presentation at the Capitol, we are informed that Emily – Dr. Sang – had been arrested and sent to jail on multiple charges. It was a terribly, perfect chain of all the wrong things happening. They take her to jail with one of those garbs on her head because she’s a biter. The authorities then decide to admit her to a specialist because of her, as they understood it, mental condition. In the mean time, we had to return to Atlanta, and continue our research without her. It’s then that we uncover the unfortunate truth: These people are not alive; they are the walking dead. They’re clinically dead: They have no real consciousness, and their personality is gone. The virus - the method that succeeded – keeps the involuntary control area of the brain firing electrical signals while maintaining its longevity. The treatment worked just not with the result we wanted.
It is safe for me to assume that we threatened our existence as the dominant species. Our research was a single domino in a chain reaction that resulted in the destruction of an urn or dad’s leg lamp; the damage can’t be undone. The individuals bitten died and returned as a biting infection. Like ravenous wolves, they pursued their prey but the prey didn’t know they were being hunted. The virus also became airborne securing itself within our nervous system lying dormant until the electrical pulses ceased. The nitrate in our saliva kills much of the bacteria in our mouths. The mouths of the walking dead were no longer producing saliva. The result is a bacteria filled bite prone to leave an infection leaving the victim susceptible to septic shock and fever weakening their immune system. The loss of blood only exacerbates the trauma. At least that is what we believe is causing the deadly fever. Nonetheless, before Dr. Edwards abandoned us, we hypothesized that if we could get the heart to pump with the viral treatment, we may be able stabilize a patient and revive the whole brain, thus no walking dead.
It's in all of us. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to carry that quest out. Vi, the CDC’s security program has initiated a self destruct sequence so when the generators fail, the building will explode as a means of decontamination. With that, this may be my last log. I hope I have found forgiveness with you all. I am sorry. I too lost a lot in this chaos. My very wife was the last walking dead I tested on. I recorded much of her failing health after she was bitten and especially her brain activity. All of her data and of Dr. Sang’s are in the secured system. All the data – the files, everything dealing with the project and the following events are on the secured hard drive and on hard copies stored in the fire safe. Combination is 1 -15-55….
This was Death's sting.
