This awesome Vampire Diaries easter egg is super simple, but when I noticed it, I was totally psyched with the attention to detail they have been ploughing into Elena's journey back to humanhood.

With a role as complicated and varied as Elena's, Nina Dobrev has relied heavily on subtle changes in her appearance to help convey changes within her life (and distinguish her from Katherine, of course!), and this explains why the now-mortal Gilbert has been looking a little different lately...

Check out this side-by-side comparison of Season 1 Elena alongside her Season 6 counterpart to see what I mean:

If you hadn't noticed before already, Elena totally has her Season 1 human hair back, along with a healthy glow that makes her look positively radiant.

The wardrobe department has even started dressing Elena in some of her more stripped down, casual human styles to help make us nostalgic for a more innocent time where the orphaned Gilbert was totally unaware of the occult.

Although Elena's vampy hairstyle remains in the image above, the clothing is a clear departure from her more badass vampire wardrobe.

While this is obviously a cute visual cue for fans to pick up on, it could hide even more significant meaning. Some theorize that this return to Elena's old look could be foreshadowing Damon compelling her to lose her memories and be just as innocent about the supernatural as before, while others think she is trying to blend in before she flees with Alaric and Jo's babies.

I'm not sure if I support either of those theories right now, but I definitely love this thoughtful touch from The Vampire Diaries crew.
