After three seasons of escalating craziness and constant nail-biting, The Following has been canceled by Fox. Despite the fact that the third season amped up the blood and even had a momentous execution, the ratings steadily fell from the highs the show hit in the first season.

Kevin Bacon was quick to Tweet a heartfelt "thank you" to fans, which really cemented the loss of the series.

To make matters worse, Fox is expediting pulling the plug by doubling up episodes. That means that two will air tonight, the final two will air next week, and then that's it. No more Ryan Hardy on a weekly basis.

If you're not ready to let go and willing to hold on to any shred of hope, there are rumors that Warner Bros. is shopping around the serial killer drama for a new network. Fox's The Mindy Project is likely making its way to Hulu after it got the axe, so maybe something similar will happen with The Following.

It's a long shot, but it's the only one we've got.
