(Warning: If you haven't yet seen Gotham's Season 1 finale, then SPOILERS rage below...)

Now, the DC universe has a whole lot of iconic villains - from Lex Luthor to Sinestro, by way of Darkseid, Doomsday and Brainiac (to say nothing of Poison Ivy, The Riddler and the rest of Batman's Rogue's Gallery), there are more than enough memorable antagonists to fill a lifetime of comic book adaptations.

There's one, though, who towers above the rest in the minds of many fans - and especially in the world of movie and TV adaptations: The Joker.

Which is why the following news is just so freaking exciting it almost hurts:

The Joker WILL Be Appearing in Gotham Season 2

Yup - that's right. Everyone's favorite Clown Prince of Crime will most definitely be making his way to the streets of Gotham in the Fox show's sophomore season - as the Network's up-fronts have already apparently revealed:

Which (along with the arrival of Mr. Freeze on our screens being something to definitely look forward to, one way or the other) is pretty darned huge news - especially considering Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller has already revealed that:

""We're going to find out how the hell Jerome, the proto-Joker we met earlier in this season, connects with the Joker as people know him. That's the big focus of the beginning of the second season. We're going to tell the story of how the Joker came to be..."

Which might just suggest that Cameron Monaghan, who plays Jerome, isn't actually quite The Joker after all - but definitely seems set to have a whole lot of involvement with the character...

So, it's time to get speculating in earnest... Are we set to see an old-school, Killing Joke-style Joker?

A more modern, New 52-esque (potentially immortal) adult Joker?

Or even the surprise reveal that Monaghan is the iconic villain after all?

It seems we're going to have to wait till next season to find out...

What do you reckon, though?
