As a recent leak of a Mass Effect 4 survey details, Bioware's next instalment in this glorious franchise will be taking us to a whole new galaxy. We'll play as pathfinder, a combat trained but un-tested explorer leading an expedition into the Helius cluster to establish a new home for humanity. However, even though this area is far removed from the previous trilogy, what are the odds of seeing some of our old friends on the release date of this new chapter?

The new Mass Effect is making like a survivor on a sinking ship and getting as far away from the Mass Effect 3 ending-wreckage as fast as possible. However, there are so many fans of this series that Bioware have to make amends with. If they simply forget the trilogy ever existed, it'd feel like an even bigger smack in the face. So what kind of tie-ins for Mass Effect fans can we expect?

Mass Effect 4: Old Characters in New Plot & Bioware Making Amends for Release Date

There will undoubtedly be heaps of easter eggs for fans to enjoy in Mass Effect 4. But easter eggs aren't really going to cut it. If the game simply has reams of text that we can study which detail the events of the trilogy, it'll be pretty disappointing - even if they have characters only reference what happened in the Milky Way, it won't be enough to get us excited.

I totally get that we need a new universe along with tons of new characters to adore in a completely fresh setting. But one of the best aspects of the Mass Effect trilogy is seeing an old friend return in another instalment. The return of Garrus in Mass Effect 2 is one of the greatest moments in the series! I'd love to see a similar moment of surprise in Mass Effect 4, but perhaps we're just too far from the Milky Way for anyone in this galaxy to know anything about who our friends were.

I think it's time for some James Bond crossovers!

Shepard will undoubtedly be referenced in Mass Effect 4 - surely you are in some form of communication with the Milky Way cluster to know of the one that took on the Reapers. But I wonder whether the rest of the team will be mentioned. There is one way that we could see the likes of Garrus and Liara again - and it's pretty cool - but some fans believe that Bioware won't feature anyone from the original trilogy.

I really hope that doesn't happen! If the Mass Effect trilogy is only referenced through texts and brief allusions to certain events by new characters, it just won't be the same. There needs to be a big easter egg for fans, and the return of an old character would be insanely perfect!
