2016 will arguably be the year of the superhero films. Starting next year, fans will be given more than what they bargained for with a total of seven films by both Marvel as well as DC. The superhero genre has exploded ever since the release of 2008’s Iron-Man. Some may argue it was the Christopher Nolan films that really got the wheels turning. Or if your like me, you may have grown up watching Bryan Singer’s original X-Men films and Sam Rami’s Spider-Man trilogy. Superhero films have a place in our hearts but if your a beloved fan of these films the future seems bright.
While we all know the titles and future releases of these Marvel/DC films, it is a great time to be a comic book fan. Both Marvel and DC have laid out their foundations but now we must hope that the films can live up to the hype. I cannot be more ecstatic for next year but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. After Avengers: Age of Ultron, we still have Ant-Man and Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot too look forward to. However, that doesn’t stop me from talking about films that will be released next year. So without further ado, here are my most anticipated superhero films in 2016.
This is one of those films that we don’t know much about other than the fact that Channing Tatum will be playing the Cajun mutant hero known as Gambit. It has been rumored that Gambit will be making an appearance in next summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. How large of a role he will have in that film is still a mystery.
I am not a big fan of Channing Tatum so this is the main reason why this film is at the bottom of the list. While I did enjoy both 21 Jump Street and its sequel, unfortunately I can’t picture him playing as one of the X-Men’s most popular mutants. He also has a very strong accent which I am curious to know how he will be portrayed. I am also curious on who the villain may be. Until I at least know the antagonist, there’s not much more I can say about the film. Gambit will be released in theaters on October 7, 2016.
Yes I know this seems low for a film with so much hype but that’s what happens when you put seven potentially amazing comic book films in one year. This film could surprise us all (maybe even the die-hard fans), but so far everything I’ve heard is overwhelmingly positive. From confirming an R-rating (by Deadpool himself), to releasing pics from the set, there has been no backlash towards this film as of yet. I am really excited as this will be the film to kick start the comic book films of 2016 with a bang! Hopefully this time Deadpool will actually have a mouth this time around (I’m looking at you Brett Ratner). We will be able to see Deadpool kick some ass on February 12, 2016.
5. Doctor Strange
Marvel is killing it with the casting. Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange? The casting for these films just keeps getting better and better. This is yet another film we know very little about besides who is playing the title character. Another thing to keep in mind is the director Scott Derrickson. This man has given us films such as Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Deliver Us from Evil. So this bodes the question; “Will Doctor Strange feel more like a horror film?” It is a very distinct possibility. After all, over the years Dr. Strange has fought many creepy villains such as Dormammu, Mephisto, and Nightmare to name a few. Dr. Strange will be released in theaters everywhere on November 4, 2016.
4. Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad will be the first feature-length film to show a team-up of some of the craziest villains in the DC comic book lore. The cast couldn’t be more impressive: Jared Leto (Joker), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Will Smith (Deadshot), and Viola Davis as the woman in charge (Amanda Waller). Ben Affleck has also been spotted on set during the production of the film so it’s not to far-fetched to think he won’t at least make a cameo appearance. Like Deadpool, Suicide Squad has remained positive except for the mixed reviews of Jared Leto’s Joker look. Let’s not forget these are just pictures. I will hold my judgment till I see the film on the big screen. For now, let’s keep the positive vibes going as we inch closer and closer to its August 5, 2016 release date.
3. X-Men: Apocalypse
Now we’re getting to my most anticipated films of the year. X-Men: Apocalypse is without a doubt the biggest X-Men film to date. Saying that the casting is HUGE would be an understatement. Last year we witnessed one of Bryan Singer’s best if not the best X-Men film to date in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The film was written and directed beautifully as Singer wiped the slate clean and will be introducing newer characters as well as previous characters as their younger selves. Some of these X-Men include Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), and Storm (Alexandra Shipp). Returning cast members include James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. The titular villain Apocalypse will be played by Oscar Issac. This film looks like its going to be amazing and I have a feeling we are in for a wild ride. [X-Men: Apocalypse](tag:1194267) will be coming to theaters on May 27, 2016.
2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
For most, this is probably the MOST anticipated superhero film in 2016. We have been waiting a LONG for a Batman vs Superman film and now it is finally happening. Henry Cavill will return as Kal-El after his blockbuster hit in Man of Steel. Ben Affleck will also star as the new interpretation of the Dark Knight. After having a disappointing role in Daredevil, Affleck looks to be upping his game for Zach Snyder’s action extravaganza. The teaser trailer has set the tone for what’s to come as we prepare for the ultimate showdown between two of DC’s most popular heroes. Snyder, don’t let us down! You can watch Batman clash with Superman on March 25, 2016.
1. Captain America: Civil War
If this film had been called what Marvel jokingly announced (Captain America: Serpent Society), then you can be damn sure Batman vs Superman would have been at the top of my list. However, since we’re talking about a Civil War, there is no reason not to have this film as my most anticipated superhero film of 2016. Ever since this film was announced back in October of last year, there is no other film I am more excited to see than [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409). Not even the anticipation of Avengers: Age of Ultron has slowed me down with excitement.
This film could potentially become the greatest superhero film ever made. Now I realize it’s early, but the more I think about it, the more I cannot wait for this film to be in theaters. It’s Tony Stark vs Captain America. That right there is enough to energize me. However, it’s not just about the rivalries that makes me excited, but the story that will unfold between both characters.
Here’s the full plot synopsis from the film:
“Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.”
It will be interesting to see what incident fractures the Avengers that will become the pivotal turning point for the team. The choices that take place, the sacrifices that will be made, and the friendships that become torn apart may signal the end of the Avengers as we know it. This film will perhaps be Marvel’s darkest film yet as the Russo brothers take center stage once again to direct. I cannot praise Captain America: The Winter Soldier any higher as it is no doubt my favorite Marvel and superhero film to date. Superheros will both fight and unite in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016.
