Few moments in film are as thrilling or as epic as a good explosion. While they are devastating and massively catastrophic, they are certainly fun to watch. After watching Mad Max: Fury Road, I started thinking about some of my favorite explosions from some of my favorite movies. I ended up choosing five, and while your favorite may have not made the list, these are the ones that have made the biggest impact on me as a film fan.

The Death Star (Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope)

Now who doesn't think of Star Wars when they think of epic explosions? Yes, you can make the argument that you technically can't hear anything in space, so you wouldn't be able to actually hear the explosion, but who cares? Even if you couldn't hear the awesome explosion in A New Hope, the spectacle was purely mesmerizing. It happens at such an iconic point in the series as well. Han shows up to save the day, Luke disables the targeting computer, and the Rebel Alliance scores their first major victory in one of the most iconic franchises of all time.

The Tank (Iron Man)

Iron Man was the first film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he wasn't that well-known of a character prior to the film. I personally wasn't a big comic fan before the MCU, so this was really my chance to get to know the character. I was interested in the character of Tony Stark, but it was that scene where Iron Man walked away from an exploding tank that I realized how truly awesome he was.

Helms Deep (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers)

I have been in love with Middle-Earth for as long as I can remember. I've experienced the majesty of Tolkien's world over and over, and one of my favorite scenes in The Lord of the Rings movies is the battle of Helm's Deep at the end of The Two Towers. The battle has so many memorable moments, from Legolas and Gimli tallying their kills to Gandalf showing up to save the day. One of my personal favorites is when the Uruk-hai beserker charges up to the wall with a torch, planning on lighting a charge to blow up the hold. While Legolas is able to stick some arrows in him, the beserker lands the torch and the hold flies up in a magnificent explosion. While technically it was a score for the bad guys, it was still fun to watch.

Fuel Truck (Mad Max: Fury Road)

Fury Road is filled with explosions, from the War Boys' exploding lances to vehicular collisions, but there was one that stuck out in the film. In one of the many high-octane battles in the film, a large truck explodes from the back to the front. It's just one explosion after another, after another, until the entire truck is devoured. It's really cinematically spectacular, and makes for a heck of a scene!

Gotham General Hospital (The Dark Knight)

This one might spawn a bit of controversy, seeing as it's a hospital that is exploding, but to make you feel better, it was evacuated beforehand. And it's, you know, fictional. I chose this explosion for the list partially for the comic effect and partially for the intensity of the destruction. The Joker's disappointment with the initial explosion and his reaction to the following detonation are both pretty humorous, and it's quite a sight to see a large building cave in on itself like that.

If you love explosions, be sure to check out Mad Max: Fury Road in theaters May 15th.
