I have been mesmerized by the heroes and villains in films and comics ever since I can remember. As a kid growing up in the South Africa of the '80s when the country was under sanctions and the internet was still in the labs, I didn’t have much access.
Being part of an Italian immigrant family, my parents would rent bootlegged Italian movies on VHS from the local Italian video shop and Italian comics from the Italian news stand. I would watch those VHS tapes over and over and can clearly recall my father telling me to stop watching them as I was always having nightmares.
Come to think of it, my first exposure to Star Wars and Dune was probably dubbed in Italian…
Being a stubborn and mischievous teenager - like that’s hard to believe - meant I didn’t listen to any such thing. This ultimately led me down the career path of creating characters and monsters for various films and video games. In my spare time I still like to play with ideas and concepts which generate variations of those beloved characters.
The Dark Knight
Batman was one of my favorite comic book heroes as a kid. Actually that hasn’t really changed and even now he's still one of my favorites.
In this version I applied my style to what it could look like having The Dark Knight still protecting Gotham City in the distant future.
In this piece I wanted to capture the moment just before Vader heads into battle, assessing the rival and unfortunate Jedi troops. May the force be with them...
Sith Lord RoKaan
For me, Darth Maul is still one of the most vicious character designs created, which inspired me to create a variation of a Sith from the same race (Dathomirian Zabrak) and really bring out the savagery and cold bloodedness in action.
