You're probably wondering why I chose this title as my first post on Movie Pilot. I can't say I'm totally excited, but I have to say that I am intrigued by these reboots that are coming out, or are already out in theaters. Ever wonder why they reboot such old ideas so often? You must be so tired of them "ruining your childhood." The reality of it is, they are taking old ideas and bringing them back into the picture for other generations to enjoy them, as if they were new ideas. We both know that's not true, but think about it: Hollywood likes to reboot the old stuff, because they love it as much as we do. They don't have a lot of new ideas, but they have to put SOMETHING out there. So, they choose what stole our hearts before, only they change the story lines to make it less boring for those of us who are familiar with the titles. Here is my select list of rebooted movies already in theaters or have yet to air.
We are all familiar with this film, as there have been so many reboots. Hollywood just loves recreating this story, as we can relate so much to it. In this rendition of the film, it has the same idea- The evil stepmother and stepsisters, Prince, Fairy Godmother, magic. But what I like about this film is the fact that they not only kept the story we all remember, they added more to the back story that they didn't quite tell in the other reboots and gave it more depth. As much as I dislike reboots, I have to say it looks like they didn't screw this one up. Watch the Trailer below:
2. The NeverEnding Story
The story really is Never-Ending! The only issue with that is, this one is going to be retold. We're not sure when, but it's in the works and has been for some time. My self, I would like to see what they've done with it. The art to promote it, as you see here, looks pretty promising. Sometimes, it's not the story that reels us in, but the graphics. Imagine the original movie with the more advanced technology we have now. Cool huh?
3. Jem and The Holograms
I got the heads up today from someone on facebook. Now, I'm not really excited about this one for a few reasons. It looks pretty well put together, but I honestly believe it could have been made into a Sci-Fi film. I say this because the trailer shows the girl band becoming Youtube stars. I get that they are trying to relate to the next generation, but the original story had magic. This seems like a low-production film that is just trying to get the attention of young aspiring Youtubers. It's got a positive message, yet, it's taking an old fantasy cartoon and trying to make it realistic. Watch the trailer below:
4. The Crow
Though this movie is still in the process of creation, we know at least two things about it. One, it may star Jack Huston. Two, it will never be the same. Now, I don't know much about this actor to judge him, so I'm not sure how good the movie will be.
According to Sony, Jumanji will be updated "for the present." This to me means that they are basically retelling the story how it was. It doesn't sound that exciting, but I'm eager to see how they plan to make Jumanji current. There is as of now no cast list. Who will fill the shoes of the late great Robin Williams? We shall see.
6. Drop Dead Fred
If you can remember this one, a young woman is reunited with her childhood imaginary friend in the original movie. It's a great idea, and they plan on rebooting it. I liked this movie, but I didn't watch it but once or twice. Bringing this one back wouldn't be so bad, as long as they stay true to the story. Unfortunately, Hollywood loves making changes. But as I've already said, they don't want to make it boring for the rest of us who are familiar. If they did that, we might as well just rent the old film and sit on our couches with a thing of popcorn. Watch the original trailer below.
I don't think anything will ever match up to our beloved Gremlins, and be cuter than Gizmo. I even named my dog after the popular creature. Of course, Hollywood loves this collection as much as we do. The earlier films were if you think about it, corny, but that's what made them fun. I imagine Hollywood is going to try and make it less corny, and take a more realistic approach while using the better technology. The story line, I fear is also subject to change. But Gremlin fans, including myself will be curious enough to watch it, just to see if it's better or completely destroyed.
I have two opinions on this. One, I'm not sure why they're bringing it back. I say this because the original movie is still said to be scary, despite the fact that it was made the year I was born. And two, maybe it's time for a reboot. Once again, when movies can be remade to look better, sometimes it's okay to bring it back. But if the story line is changed and the actors suck, then they might as well rename the movie or try to find a different plot. Watch the original and new trailers below, and you be the judge.
9. Dirty Dancing
You can forget the idea of having this movie 'reenacted' the same way. Our beloved Patrick Swayze is gone, and according to a post by Roger Friedman, the original writer has not been contacted. Do not be surprised if this film is not the same as the classic, because it won't be. If you're going to watch this film, keep an open mind, and don't expect the same 'dance.' <--Pun intended! Watch the final dance below.
10. The Craft
It was interesting in its time. I would like to see what kind of twist they decide to put on 'The Craft.' I believe it's actually too early for a reboot of this movie, even though it was done in the 90s. And truthfully, I'm not exactly sure on why they decided to reboot it at all. It's an old idea, and there have recently been television shows that were similar to the idea. One example in particular would be the show 'The Secret Circle.' If this movie does not bring anything new to the table, it will be a box office dud. Watch the original trailer below.
In conclusion to the list of 10 rebooted movies, I would like to hear which one you think should or shouldn't have been added to the list, and why. We all have the right to our own opinions, and as I've stated in one way or another I am indifferent. None of us are big fans of reboots, because it doesn't quite touch us in the same way the original did.
