With the MCU's Phase 2 drawing to a close with Ant-Man in July, we are about to witness the dawn of Phase 3. And as I'm sure you know, it's based around a pretty particular storyline from one of Marvel's biggest comic events ever, The Infinity Gauntlet series! Yes the next 3 years are going to be a huge cinematic event that will conclude with the almighty two part movie; Avengers Infinity War. It's hard to believe that in 2018 we are going to witness our favorite heroes battle the Mad Titan Thanos, who will be very likely weilding all 6 Infinity Stones in the Gauntlet. The only problem is, Thanos is yet to get his hands on even one of the Stones (as far as we know). So, how will he manage to gather the Stones in the space of 3 years I hear you ask, well here are my theories on how Thanos will individually collect the Infinity Stones. These are in chronological order so first up...

The Power Stone/Orb

The Orb from Guardians of the Galaxy
The Orb from Guardians of the Galaxy

The movie he will collect it: Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (5th May 2017)

Why will the Orb will be the first Stone that Thanos crosses off his list? I think because it's probably one of the easiest to obtain in the MCU right now! The last time we see the Power Stone it has been safely placed in a vault on Xandar guarded by the Nova Corps so you may be thinking, 'how is that the easiest Stone to get? Come on man!' Hear me out, after Ronan's genocidal attempt to destroy Xandar failed in GotG, the Nova Corps were left in very bad shape as most of the members of the Corps died in the aerial battle. So now with the Nova Corps badly crippled Thanos could easily overrun Xandar and take the Power Stone. I think this would best be displayed in the opening scene of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 because it would really set the tone for the next few years of the MCU.

Imagine this, after the Marvel logo at the start of the film the scene is set on Xandar. We see shots of the peaceful planet incorporated with joyful music and then we go to the Nova Corps and see Nova Prime and her colleagues going about their days work. Then suddenly the sky darkens and the music stops, everyone looks up expecting to see cloud cover but what the witness is Thanos descending on the planet. He crashes through the window and makes his way to the vault, dispatching of any resistance with ease. Then he retrieves the Orb from the vault and makes his way outside to witness the distress and chaos he's inflicted on the planet. Taking a moment to bask in the chaos, he watches the Xandarians flee in terror and then Thanos smirks to himself. Bringing the stone to his face to observe it, he calmly says, "all too easy" and then punches the ground with the Stone. We see a quick glance of the power from the stone erupting in all directions and then... the screen cuts and shows us the title like in Age of Ulton.

What a opening to a film this would be! For the first time we could actually see the Mad Titan in all his glory and we'd get a feeling of not only would we actually get a real glimpse of Thanos' true power and brutality but it would get us really emotionally invested with the MCU! How incredibly devastating would it be seeing the busy, thriving planet of Xandar which we all love destroyed before our eyes in a matter of minutes; and all by a guy who made it look as easy as taking the bins out! But there is a plus side to the planet's destruction, it could easily set up future MCU movies for this guy...

Nova!!!
Nova!!!

So with the first Stone in Thanos' back pocket that leads us too...

The Time Stone/Unknown

This isn't the official Time Stone of course...
This isn't the official Time Stone of course...

The movie he will collect it: Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (5th May 2017)

I'm not a betting man, but if I was I'd put my money on the Time Stone being a significant part of the plot in GotG 2. Why? Well it is well known that the Guardians have dabbled in time travel in the comics before, so why not on screen?

My theory is that after hearing about the destruction of Xandar the Guardians are distraught but decide to band together to put an end to Thanos' tyrannical ways. Rumor has it he's going after another Stone on the other side of the galaxy (the Time Stone) so the Guardians race off to try and get to it first. Of course this is the Guardians of the Galaxy we are talking about here so no doubt, chaos, laughs and tears will follow their epic quest all the way! But with the Time Gem in play could we see our heroes time travel to the past, or even the future (foreshadowing Infinity War) in this film? I sure hope so!

However I do not think that Thanos should be the main villain in this film (leave that until Infinity Wars) so maybe he would send someone to do his dirty work for him, maybe a very powerful being that would be an awesome match for the Guardians. Say like, a SUPER SKRULL! I'm dying to see the Skrulls on the big screen so what better way than to give us a little preview to what they are capable of in this movie. And you never know Secret Invasion could be right around the corner...

But lets not get ahead of ourselves...
But lets not get ahead of ourselves...

So, considering that the Super Skrull and his task force of Skrulls would probably retrieve the Orb for Thanos this leaves him with 4 to collect. So without further a due, the next Stone I think we will see is...

The Space Stone/Tesseract

The Tesseract from Avengers
The Tesseract from Avengers

The movie he will collect it: [Thor: Ragnarok](tag:956858) (28 July 2017)

The last time we see the Tesseract in the MCU is in The Avengers when Thor takes both it and Loki back to Asgard. So it must be safely locked up in Odin's vault with no chance of Thanos getting it, right? Wrong? If you remember back to Thor The Dark World, Odin no longer sits on the throne of Asgard but rather Loki pretending to be his father (major daddy issues am I right?)

So by the time Thor Ragnarok comes around in 2017. I believe that Thanos will have realised that it is actually Loki that rules Asgard and so he tries to strike a bargain with the God of Mischief. He offers forgiveness for the failure of Loki in the Avengers in return for the Tesseract. Loki being well.. Loki, arrogantly says he doesn't need Thanos' favor anymore which angers the Mad Titan, but he leaves Asgard be for the time being. Although in the third act of the film when all hell breaks lose (quite literally as Ragnarok is this Asgardian Armageddon), Thanos returns to Loki offering aid for Asgard if the Tesseract is handed over. With all the destruction of Asgard so far, Loki reluctantly agrees to the terms, not wanting any more harm to come to his world. However as Loki hands over the Tesseract, Thanos betrays Loki and beats him within an inch of his life. Before he leaves, Thanos utters the cold phrase, "no one defies me, especially not a filthy Frost Giant."

After Thor defeats the demons that attack Asgard and safes the day, he hunts through the ruins to find his brother (who he's extremely peeved at for pretending to be Odin). However, he finds the bloody and beaten Loki who tells him what happened and apologizes for everything that has happened. A few touchy moments later Loki dies and Thor promises to avenge his death.

And he stays dead this time...
And he stays dead this time...

In my opinion, this would be a really interesting subplot to a momentous film and it would have a big impact on the rest of the MCU. Again it would showcase Thanos' brutality and really get us hyped up for Infinity War. But the reason I love this theory is because it would be a fitting end to Loki who's just about run his course in the MCU by. And when you have a stupendous actor in Tom Hiddleston, how could you resist doing a scene as touching as this. This leaves Thanos with 3 Infinity Stones to get and I shall finish my theories in Part 2.

So...

What do you think of my theories?

Do you like my theories or do you have any of your own you'd like to share? Please feel free to share in the comments!

Part 2 of this article will be coming soon! I will leave a link to it in the comments below once it's complete. Thanks for reading!
