The answer is yes....and then some.

Before I begin talking plot, let me just preface by saying....this movie is weird. As it says in the trailer, "everyone has gone out of their minds" given the lack of resources following an apocalypse. The movie make no light of this as everyone, even Max, is downright crazy which is what makes this movie so fun! No one reacts to anything in a normal and sane way which adds to the unpredictability of it. You really don't know what anyone's going to do. So if you're the kind who likes to watch simple folk do simple things, this might not be the movie for you because there is some weird stuff in this movie. But if you can just shut your brain off for two hours and accept the crazy awesomeness this movie brings, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Given that this movie is meant to be purely action, the plot is fairly simple. The story takes place across a vast desert in a future apocalyptic world. Here, a woman named Furiosa attempts to rescue and transport a group of women from the clutches of a mad dictator called, Immortan Joe. In there efforts to escape they are constantly pursued and attacked by the dictator's equally mad subjects. Notice how I didn't even mention Max (played by Tom Hardy) in the description because he is not the star of this movie. It may be called Mad Max but it would almost be more appropriate to name it after Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron. She steals this movie to the point where one has to wonder, who is the real lead of this movie? There where parts of this movie that really felt like Max was a secondary character and was really there to further Furiosa's character development. This is not a bad thing since she kicked some serious ass but it was definitely something I was not expecting. Max, in this film, is simply a guy who gets caught in the middle of everything and has to decide who's side he's on-- Furiosa's or himself.

This movie is basically two hours of none stop action . If you ever wondered what a two hour car chase would look like, well look no further because this is as close as you will get. The movie follows Furiosa and Max as they attempt to out run Immortan Joe and his gang of insane men. The actions scene are out of this world, from people jumping car to car, guys flying up in the air, people switching cars by riding on poles, things exploding, people dying in gruesome ways, this movie has everything! The spectacle of it all really makes you have to appreciate what George Miller, the director, can do. The action is so well shot and there is not a single shaky cam in sight!

With all this action, you wouldn't think there would be any time for actual story or character development but no! We get to learn a lot about Furiosa in particular. In an effort to avoid spoilers I can't tell you everything but you really feel like she is a real person just thrown into this crazy world. Another character that has some good development is Nicolas Hoult's character, Nux. The movie really explores his psyche and why he is the way he is and it is wonderful to witness. Again I don't want to spoil anything but he was quite an interesting character.

I really loved the movie overall but there were time that I felt like they could have done more. Like I mentioned, this movie is crazy weird! As you saw in the trailer, one of the vehicles that is chasing after Max and Furiosa is one with a guy playing a guitar and a bunch of guys playing the drums on the other side. It makes no sense but it looks cool and adds to the chaotic vibe the movie has going. What I would have liked to have seen was some more creativity in the shots. They really could have gone full on weird here with weird camera angles and more sweeping shots all perfectly times to some kind of awesome music but there really wasn't much of that. Visually it looked fine but I thought that was one area they could of been more creative.

At this point, however, I am just nitpicking. I could also point out the Max was hardly developed at all but that's not the point of the story. The point of this story is for there not to be a point to this story. Its just solid fun action backed by crazy weird characters in an awesome post apocalyptic wasteland. It excels at where so many recent action films fail today (i.e taken 2 and 3). I highly recommend this film.
