With Marvel and DC ripping up the big and small screen, it was only a matter of time before Vertigo Comics would also get in on the action. So far we've already had iZombie and Constantine on television, while there are also rumors that Neil Gaiman's The Sandman will also receive a film adaptation.
However, perhaps the most exciting project due to arrive in the short term is the potential upcoming Preacher. I say 'potential' because so far directors and writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have only been commissioned by AMC to create a pilot, and not a full series. But given the track record of his comedic duo, I think we can all rest relatively assured that their pilot will cut muster with the studio heads.
Today, to commemorate the start of filming, Rogen tweeted a first look at Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer and Ian Colletti as Arseface in Preacher. Check it out below:
Sure, the picture is kind of dark, but any who knows Preacher knows that's kind of the point. For those of you who don't, here's the synopsis:
Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, and has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned his responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making him answer for his dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers —a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.
If all goes to plan, we can expect to see Preacher on air in either late 2015 or sometime in 2016.
