Going into the theater to see The Avengers three years ago, I had extremely high hopes for this movie. Unfortunately, I found myself leaving the theater a little disappointed that night. While I cannot pin the disappointment on the plot or any of the acting in particular, the fact is that the hype surrounding the movie was unrealistic and I left the theatre desiring something more. This May, I got that something more with Avengers: Age of Ultron. I had the same extraordinarily high expectations and I was able to leave the theater not only satisfied, but incredibly impressed! Now I have reasons for this, I’m not just on my soapbox hoping someone is listening… for the most part.
One key reason I like Age of Ulton better would be because of the comedy. Now I know what you are thinking, “The Avengers was hilarious!”, and yes it was but it was a different kind of comedy. The Avengers comedy seemed more forced, while Age of Ultron felt like real comedic situations I may experience in real life with my friends. An example of this would have to be my favorite scene when Captain America tried to lift Thor’s hammer and it budged and then seeing Thor’s reaction was priceless! Also, when Iron man brings up that Captain America said “language” (as in watch the language after he used a curse word), it just did not appear to me like they were reading from a script, even though they probably were.
I love Iron Man and the Hulk and I think they deserve a lot of screen time, but in The Avengers, especially the major fight scenes, the screen time was heavily weighted in their favor. Sure Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye had their moments, but they did not have anywhere near the screen time as Iron Man and Hulk had. It was very nice to be able to see much more of Hawkeye…who has a family? Did anyone really see that one coming? Thor was also much more involved throughout the Age of Ultron, this would be with comedy and more action scenes. We were also able to see Captain America assume the leadership role of the Avengers that we all knew he would, because he is a boss… literally! We were also able to see and learn a good amount about the newbies, Scarlet Witch ,Quicksilver, and also the boss that is Vision. It was great in The Avengers to see Hulk and Iron Man play such an important role, but it was so much better seeing all of the Avengers playing a more equal role.
We all know that Loki is a truly formidable foe that uses sarcasm and comedy that ranks right up there with Tony Stark. But that is just it, we know Loki from the Thor saga. We know he can be a bad dude that has daddy issues. With Age of Ultron I had no idea what to expect, because it was a new enemy even if he was somewhat created by Stark and Banner. It was because of this uncertainty that it left me in suspense about what Ultron was trying to do and would be able to do to fight the Avengers. I also was very hesitant to trust The Vision as he was originally created by Ultron in the movie and comics. He was able to gain my trust when he picked up Thor’s hammer, then all was good.
To go off of the suspense of the new enemy, Age of Ultron was a much more suspenseful movie in total than that of The Avengers. The Avengers movie did have the most suspenseful scene of both movies combined, thank you Iron Man and the wormhole. However, this was the only scene that I really felt any of the Avengers were in any real sort of danger. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, I felt that two to three Avengers might not make it out. This would include Quicksilver (for obvious reasons), Hawkeye, and Thor, yes I said Thor and I do know that there is a third Thor movie coming out, but I just was unsure because of the beating he was taking from Ultron to buy some time for Vision to help take out Ultron. Then of course the scene where the Infinity Gauntlet is shown with Thanos saying he will take care of things by himself. This builds so much suspense leading up to the third Avengers’ movie! Thanos is the main villain of the Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet is hands down the most powerful weapon in the MCU. In anticipation for the third Avengers film, I’m already giddier than a school girl at prom!
The Avengers was a great movie with a lot of really good scenes and acting. However, in my opinion, Age of Ultron was most definitely the superior movie in just about every single way. The comedy was as close to perfect as you could get, the movie screen time was much more even among the heroes, there was a completely new villain (Ultron) and new characters were also introduced (Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver… for a little bit), and this movie was more suspenseful than the first Avengers movie (form the movie to the end credit scenes). Let me know what you think about the article and about Avengers: Age of Ultron, also if you agree or disagree with my point of view!
