As I'm sure you know, the next stand-alone Wolverine movie after X-Men: Apocalypse will be Hugh Jackman's last appearance as everyone's favorite X-Man. As much as it saddens me to think about losing the perfect actor for this character, you have to think, Who can play Wolverine now? Hugh Jackman set the bar high with a 15 year run as the character that made his career, so who could possibly fill his shoes? The movie business today is filled with talented actors that could potentially take on a superhero such as Wolverine, but can they be as good as Hugh Jackman?
In this opinionated article, I'm giving you a rundown of the actors that I believe can give Jackman a run for his money, and give us a satisfying X-Men movie. (Also possible spoilers if you haven't seen X-Men: Days of Future Past!)
I probably know what you're thinking, but just hear me out. You can't tell me Keanu Reeves doesn't have what it takes to play Wolverine. He is dark and gritty in almost every role he plays, and he hasn't diminished with age. If you haven't seen John Wick yet, watch it. Not only is it one of the best new non-Marvel movies I've seen in a while, it could very well be one of the best movies I've seen period. Also, from what I understand, Wolverine is supposed to be an older character, or at least he had somewhat gray hair at the end of Days of Future Past. Reeves is only 4 years older than Jackman, so he can still be believed as a credible action star, but wouldn't need to be made up to look too much older.
I'm going to say right now, I don't like Crowe as much as some of the others in this article. Honestly, one of the only reasons I suggest him is that he was considered as Wolverine first, back in 2000 when he was still kind of in his prime. The reason I bring him up now is because of Man of Steel. Before watching that movie, I never thought of him as an action hero. I was aware that he had done a ton of action movies, but I've never seen most of them. Even though Crowe isn't the name on everyone's lips, he could potentially be a good wolverine.
Honestly, I don't know if after the next Wolverine movie if he's supposed to be older still or back to the age he was. If Wolverine is supposed to be the same age he was, Karl Urban in my opinion is a perfect choice. This man can play anything. He's played dark and gritty roles in films like Judge Dredd and The Chronicles of Riddick, as well as the show Almost Human. Urban may not be able to pull off the overall bulkiness that Jackman possesses, but he can do the role and make it his own, and that's what matters most.
I'll admit that this one is a bit of a stretch, but Norman Reedus is in fact a badass. He's not as muscular as I would like him to be, but if he can get in shape for the role he could do great.
I honestly only know Edgerton because of his publicity for Exodus: Gods and Kings (and a quick Wikipedia search), but he looks like Wolverine. I've never seen his work, but he has done some big budget movies with famous actors, so I have faith that he is a good enough actor to play Wolverine.
That is my list of actors that could replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Let me know if my choices were good in the comments!
