Fresh off an almost perfect Rotten Tomatoes Critic score and a strong opening weekend at the Box Office, Mad Max doesn't look to be done as director George Miller revealed that there are plans for another film and they already have their title.
Miller confirmed that the possible sequel would be titled MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND. The director said the following:
“We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened because with the delays [on Fury Road] and writing all the backstories, they just expanded.”
If you've read my review or follow me on Twitter, you know I went gaga for the latest Mad Max film, I loved every second of it. You can check out my review here. I thought the film in terms of its action and spectacle was flawless and I can't wait for a sequel. But....this title doesn't have me going as crazy. It's a decent sounding title, and I may get more excited about it when I hear it in context of the story, but to me FURY ROAD had much more a bite to it.
Miller as he should be is eager to continue this franchise, which is even more impressive when considering the directors age of 70 years old. Mad Max: Fury Road has already made $109 Million at the Worldwide Box Office on a $150 Million budget, so I think it's safe to assume that it will break even and become a success, especially with the great word of mouth going around about the film.
Star of the film Charlize Theron who plays Imperator Furiosa has expressed little interest in returning for a follow up because of how grueling the shoot for Fury Road was. I can't blame the actress for not wanting to return. The film is 90% action, and that must have been incredibly tough. If you've seen the film, you'll know that Furiosa doesn't really need to return, her story is done.
From what it sounds like Tom Hardy would be up for it, he's very positive about the film in interviews, he's admitted the toughness of the shoot but seems very happy with the final product and the experience he had on set.
The Wasteland does not need to be a follow on from Fury Road and in fact I think that would work best for a trilogy, to have three unconnected stories in Max's life, to see him traverse the post apocalyptic world.
As a huge fan of this film, I'm happy either way. I would love to have a sequel to this incredible movie, because I just want to explore more of the world, and see more of George Miller's inventiveness in action. But....if we don't get a sequel, we are still left with one of the finest pieces of action cinema ever put to film.
