Dark, gritty, and edgy is exactly what we all think about with Marvel, right? Of course not! In the present era of Marvel in the entertainment industry (since the first Iron Man in 2008), Marvel has actually taken the exact opposite approach with a more positive outlook of optimism, comedy, and lightheartedness. Movies such as Avengers, the entire Iron man series, and the Thor movies (Loki especially) truly exemplify this point. Has marvel been successful in producing entertainment in this fashion, the answer is undoubtedly yes! However, with Netflix’s dark new series of Daredevil being so successful, will Marvel shy away from the optimistic and hopeful entertainment that has made it so successful?
When I said Netflix’s dark new series of Daredevil, I was not kidding around… and neither were the creators of this show. The Netflix original series has taken darkness, the grit of the city, and edginess of characters to an entirely new level. Marvel has elected to make this new Daredevil series the most realistic and gruesome of the superhero TV shows or movies that I have seen in the new era of superhero entertainment. For those of you who have seen the Daredevil Netflix series you know what I am talking about when I say gruesome, with the most obvious example involving Fisk and a car door… enough said. There are many other scenes that make me not want to eat food while I am watching this show as well.
The Marvel universe has/will release some new movies this year. With Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel went to a more family-friendly film to cater to a wider audience. While this film was of Marvel’s usual upbeat and comedic (and slightly predictable) formula, I loved it all the same. This should also be the case with the Ant-Man coming out in June. It appears that it will be the same type of comedic, upbeat, and honestly predictable movie. However, Fox’s new adaptation of The Fantastic Four franchise looks like it will have a darker feel to the reboot. Though it will have some comedy as most superhero movies do, it came across to me as a more serious movie than the original series. This is also the case with another Fox owned franchise the X-Men. There will be some comedy, but it is not one of the pillars of success, or somewhat lack thereof… I’m looking at you X-Men: The Last Stand.
The Daredevil series is clearly like nothing Marvel has attempted in the modern superhero entertainment industry. But Marvel has obviously been able to prove that it not only can they make it in this new adult focused industry, but in can greatly succeed. With that being said, is this the dawning of a new era for Marvel? I think however Marvel answers this will be very interesting. Will Marvel try to hit a more adult audience, or will it continue down the more everyone friendly entertainment. I answer this by using the great words of Tony Stark from Iron Man, “Is it too much to ask for both?”
What direction would you like Marvel to go?
Marvel has been extremely successful with its elastic waistband entertainment that is the more optimistic style of trying to make films for all audiences. With Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Avengers’ movies all taking this more light hearted style. Nothing is wrong with this style in my opinion as it allows Marvel to hit a younger generation, while not leaving out older generations. However, the new Daredevil series has been extraordinarily successful and is 100% trying to hit this new completely adult market. If parents let their younger children watch this show, shame on you! I am 20 years old and I still find myself at times thinking “What would my mother say if she knew what I was watching?” I really do not think I want to know the answer to that… anyways it’s dark and gruesome and very much not for kiddos.
With the success of the Daredevil series, it is obvious that Marvel is not going to stop with this dark, gritty, and edgy style for TV shows. In fact Marvel has confirmed that there will be three other Netflix exclusive TV shows that are in the works, which includes Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. However, just because of the success of the Daredevil series, Marvel should not and will not abandon its “come one, come all” type of entertainment… this type of entertainment has been far too successful to do this.
Which upcoming Netflix original are you most excited for?
Marvel will of course continue to produce the same lighthearted entertainment that many people love. They will also keep making dark and gritty entertainment just like Daredevil…why, because it works. I believe that with the current characters in the movies including but not limited to Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, and the rest of the Avengers will continue the more optimistic style of entertainment, but with the success of Daredevil they may venture out into this dark and gritty world in more television shows and even movies in the future. I am looking forward to both! What about you?
Which genre are you most excited to see from Marvel? (Not quite the same question as the first one)
As always I would love to hear feedback from you! Feel free to leave comments, questions, or thoughts!
