With the excitement mounting for the brand new AMC series Fear the Walking Dead we've been keeping our eyes and ears open for any and all news on the series, and today we've been rewarded with the news that Rubén Blades will join the cast as a series regular!

According to Deadline, Blades just closed the deal with AMC and will play a character named Daniel, the father of Mercedes Mason's character, Ofelia.

Blades most recently appeared on screens as Jefe in the 2013 film The Counselor and as Carlos Villar in Safe House, though according to his IMDB profile, Fear The Walking Dead will be his first TV series role since starring in Gideon's Crossing back in 2001.

In addition to Mercedes Mason, the 66-year-old actor also joins a growing cast, including Cliff Curtis, Kim Dickens, Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey who will play four of the main characters: Travis, Madison, Nick, and Alicia.

Fear The Walking Dead will act as a companion series to the wildly popular The Walking Dead, and will be set in Los Angeles. The show will be set during the same zombie apocalypse as The Walking Dead, but will focus on a whole new set of characters and environments, as well as exploring the early days of the outbreak which The Walking Dead did not cover.
