COPS: "Whatcha Gonna Do When They Come For You" In the 1980's, one show made the groundbreaking discovery that if you ditch the script and film gritty, real life events viewers will be hooked. Thus, with COPS Reality TV was born. Filmed on location following real life Police officers in car chases and making arrests and putting "Bad Boys" behind bars COPS defined real life drama.
MTV: On August, 1 1981, Video indeed killed the radio star, when MTV aired. The Buggles aptly named song "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the first song aired on TV by the now Iconic network (That no longer plays music). MTV launched the era of the Music Video and changed not only the music industry but gave birth to a new generation dubbed "The MTV Generation". Possibly the most significant Pop Culture definer from the 80's to today.
M*A*S*H: Hawkeye, Trapper John, Frank, and of course Hot Lips, burst on the small screen in September, 1972 depicting events occurring during the Korean War. M*A*S*H was the first series of its kind being set in an active war and showing how a medical team used laughter to deal with the harsh realities of their situation. The Series Finale entitled "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen", was the most watched and highest rated single television episode in U.S. television history at the time, with a record-breaking 125 million viewers. In 2013, the Writers Guild of America ranked it as the fifth best written TV series ever and TV Guide ranked it as the eighth greatest show of all time.
American Idol: When you think of names like, Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood, and Kelly Clarkson the first thought that pops in your mind is American Idol. Reality TV at it's Peak, this show proves that if you put an opportunity in front of us we will stop at nothing to seize it. From William Hung to Sanjaya, and Kelly Clarkson to Clay Aiken, America's votes have launched the careers of some of the most influential and iconic pop sensations.
