First of all, I think/hope we can all agree that the cast for the TV show are looking much more like the characters than the movie cast.
As I say this, please know that the movie cast, (Lily Collins, JCB, Robert Sheehan, Lena Headey, Jonathan Rhys Meyers etc), are all amazing actors. But some just did not fit the charter they were playing. Such as, I don't know about you, but when you read TMI did Valentine ever come across as a 29 year old rockstar/pirate wanna be? Didn't think so, but the movie creator did. The one thing that the movie needed work on was that the writers needed to understand what the story line was. Not everyone was after the mortal cup, Clary does not know about her ability to see new runes until COA, she does not turn into Mary Poppins at the end, and does not get the cup at the end.
I could go on, but lets turn to the good news, what the TV show looks like so far. It has been picked up for a season by abc family. You heard right, we don't have to worry about a bad pilot, as we are definitely getting a season! With all of this excitement, lets see the cast.
Our main girl "Clary"
Yes everyone a natural 'carroty' red head as Clary describes herself in the books. Katherine McNamara graduated high school with honors at just 14, then graduated uni with honors at 17. She first was on broadway at age 13, she played 'Fredrika Armfeldt' in A Little Night Music with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury. She has since been in many roles on stage and in front of a camera. So I don't know about you guys, but I have a lot of faith in Kat that she will be able to bring Clary to life that no one could ever do.
Our main guy 'Jace'
First of all, Vampire Academy fandom (which I am apart of) we can share Dom right? Dom has one blue eye and one brown eye, which makes him very unique. He appears to be a somewhat new actor, with credits going back to a 2010 tv series short 'the cut', since then he has been in Taylor Swifts style music video, and has co-starred as the brooding Christian Ozera, (which he surprised me with his amazing performance) in Vampire Academy. Overall, I feel that Dom will make an amazing Jace, not ashamed to admit that I fangirled when I found out that he was cast as Jace.
The best friend 'Simon'
Now I must admit that when I found out about this casting I said, "That's not Robert." But as I have looked him up and seen pics of him and the cast, he seems to be a real cutie-pie, and with simons glasses on he really transforms into the simon I imagined. Alberto studied at NYU, he spent two semesters taking stonestreet studios acting workshop. He has been in a short film as a swing dancer, and in a episode of 'Blue Bloods'. He is a complete new actor, and I am excited to see his acting skills on screen.
The beautiful killer 'Isabelle'
Ok, this is basically someone has managed to go into the book and pull Isabelle out of it. Emeraude looks exactly like Isabelle, she is impossibly beautiful. As for her acting ability, I personally have not seen her act in anything. She has been in what appears to be all things spanish. But I am sure that she would not have gotten the role if she wasn't the right person to play her.
The emotional demon hunter 'Alec'
He is a little different look wise than what I pictured but it is not all about looks. Matt has Italian, Irish, English and Czech ancestry. He began studying acting and auditions in 2010, so also a somewhat new actor. He started with adverts for Amazon Kindle and Burger King, then went on and got movie roles in Breathe In, Delivery Man and When The Game Stands Tall. He first went for the role of Jace, but when Cassandra Clare watched his tape, she said, 'He would be a perfect Alec', to the producers, and he was later cast as such. Again I have not seen him in action yet, but I am confidant in him.
The one, the only 'Magnus Bane'
Look familiar? The high warlock of brooklyn will be played by the amazing Harry Shum Jr, yes Mike. Harry has amazing dancing ability, which we get to see in glee, but also the great step up movies where he plays Cable. With this, wouldn't it be great to see Magnus, not only a dance scene but a Magnus dance off scene. That would be hilariously funny, and also just what Magnus would do if he had these amazings skills that Harry has. When I heard this news I full out yelled in excitement, he is perfect for this role. His acting ability, as seen in glee, is very high as he had me laughing and full out crying with that storyline with his dad. I am extremely excited to see him as the sass master warlock Magnus.
The father figure 'Luke'
Isaiah again I feel does look the part. He played football at Arizona State University, he graduated from Arizona State Uni in 1997. In 2010 he was in People's Magazine Most Beautiful People. He is best known for, The Three Stooges, Rags:The Movie, Madea's Big Happy Family and Horrible Bosses. But again I personally have not seen him act, but he would not of gotten the part if he wasn't the best for the part.
The over protective Mum 'Jocelyn'
Maxim does have a very Jocelyn face, meaning she looks the part. She has been acting since about 1992 with Coyote, and since has been in many movies and tv shows. She is best known for ReGenesis in 2004 and Hidden Agenda 2001. I do not think that I have seen anything that she is in, although she does seem very familiar to me, but I can't put my finger on it. I do believe that she will make a great Jocelyn although we most likely will not get to see more of her as Jocelyn until the third or fourth season.
And the award for worst father of the year goes to 'Valentine'
First things first, thanks for being over 40. Alan, particularly in the picture above, has one of those faces that says don't-mess-with-me-if-you-do-then-you-will-regret-it. Alan has a history of playing badasses, he has been in rather intense movies and tv shows, he don't mess around. He is known for Reign 2013-2015 (where he plays a king that goes mad), Immortals 2011, Survival of the Dead 2009, Saw III 2006 and Land of the Dead 2005. So we have possibly the best actor to play one of best villains that I have ever read in a fantasy book series. I have complete faith in him for the charter of Valentine.
As of right now I don't know who will be playing the characters of Hodge, Raphael, Madame Dorothea or Simon's band members.
We also know that the characters have been aged up, so instead of Clary being about to turn 16 she will be turning 18. Clary is attending the 'Brooklyn Academy Of Art', and Simon is an accounting student. Simon's band members will be different to the members of the book. The TV series is set to premiere on abc family in early 2016, it has been set at 13 episodes for the first season, but could get more based on how many people watch. Filming will start in Toronto Canada, on the 25th of May.
Here we have the main 3 cast members being very cute together in Toronto.
Then Jace and Luke getting all those muscles beefed up and strong.
Then Clary joins the fun.
Overall I strongly believe that this TV show will be amazing. I am re-reading the books in order to get back into the shadowhunter world. Tell me in the comments your thoughts about this upcoming TV show, if you think that something should be different, or something that they changed that you wish was kept the same as the books. What are you most excited to see on screen? I can't wait to see Magnus's party, also I hope that Church and Chairman meow is in the series.
