The Muppets have been a pop culture staple for many of us for 60 years, but even for the biggest fan there are still some facts that you may not know about your favorite hand-mounted friends.
1. Kermit the Frog is the only Amphibian-American to ever testify before the United States Congress
In 2008, Kermit and a team of conservationists spoke to Congress about the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, promoting awareness of endangered amphibians.
2. Gonzo the Great only performed 20 stunts on The Muppet Show
They ranged from singing a song while tap-dancing in oatmeal to battling a crab, surprising though as the show ran for 120 episodes and his outrageous stunts are one of the things he is most well-known for.
3. Miss Piggy has appeared on 6 magazine covers
Though there are a lot of fan made magazine covers for our favorite pig, she has only appeared on the cover of 6 magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post, TV Guide, and LIFE.
I am still holding out for a Cosmopolitan cover.
4. Rowlf the Dog was the first superstar
In the 1960s he started appearing in commercials for Purina Dog Chow. He went on to appear as Jimmy Dean's sidekick on The Jimmy Dean Show, and received more fan-mail than Jimmy Dean himself!
5. Scooter's Uncle owns the Muppet Theater
Kermit agreed to hire Scooter because his uncle owns the theater. J. P. Grosse is his name, being a jerk was his game. He appeared in a handful of episodes of The Muppet Show to bug Kermit.
6. Kermit and Miss Piggy are NOT married
They do have a wedding in The Muppets Take Manhattan but Kermit maintains that it was the characters not themselves who got married. Miss Piggy insisted they were married, but eventually went back to trying to get him to propose and finally commit to her.
7. Pepe the King Prawn originally had a partner: Seymour the Elephant
They worked as elevator operators and canteen cooks during Muppets Tonight. After the show ended, Pepe went to stardom and Seymour returned to the elevator business.
8. Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem have never released an album...
...For which the music business is surely missing out. Their music has appeared on soundtracks for 8 films, two Christmas albums and a few TV specials, but they have never released a solo album.
9. Lew Zealand has appeared in every Muppet movie
And had speaking roles in all but Muppet's Treasure Island.
10. The Muppets have family members who sometimes make appearances
There was Uncle J.P. Grosse, of course. Most notable, however, was Kermit's adorable nephew Robin, who made an appearance as Tiny Tim in A Muppet's Christmas Carol.
Other appearances are Gonzo's family who came down from space in Muppets from Space, Miss Piggy's nephews Andy and Randy on Muppets Tonight and various mothers appeared on an episode of Muppets Tonight.
11. Fozzie Bear has a ruthless agent and ghost writer
Fozzie's agent is Irving Bizarre, a man so short that his hat covers most of his body! Fozzie gets most of his jokes from famous writer, Gags Beasly, who Fozzie pays by the laugh.
Whether you are new to the Muppets, or grew up with them, there is always something new to learn from and about them.
