The Gears of War franchise has been lying dormant for too long. Marcus Fenix and his kick-ass team were one of the main reasons that I loved my Xbox 360 and Gears of War was the first game I picked up on a last generation console. Its gameplay mechanics are still a reference point for every cover-based shooter out there in my opinion. Over the years the formula was refined and expanded upon to the point where Gears of War 3 was everything you could ever want from the franchise.
But now we know that Microsoft aren't done with this great IP. Black Tusk studios are in the middle of developing Gears of War 4 alongside a remastered development of the initial Gears of War for the XBOX One. Microsoft's new console hasn't been doing well, and that's due in no small part to its lack of great exclusive games. But with Rise of the Tomb Raider, Halo 5 and Gears of War 4 on the horizon, they still have some fight left in them.
Gears of War 4 vs Halo 5 on Xbox One Release Date
But where do your loyalties lie when it comes to these two giants? The Halo franchise has been around a lot longer than Gears, and Master Chief has become one of the most recognisable characters in Video Games. Halo 2 is one of my favourite FPSs of all time and Halo 5 looks like it means to continue the tradition of greatness that has permeated throughout the whole franchise. But that being said...Gears of War is incredible.
In terms of hours spent, I've definitely engaged with Gears of War a lot more. Myself and my friends were brought together to play Gears on a number of occasions. There's nothing that compares with the power of local play, and both Halo and Gears have been masters of it for years. But when I look at these two franchises and wonder which one I'm looking forward to the most, I can't help but support Gears of War 4.
Gears of War 4 is one of my most anticipated titles for E3 this year. I can't wait to see what Black Tusk have done with the game, or even what the setting for the new title looks like! What new characters will we have? What new gameplay mechanics will be introduced? And will it still be the master of local play? I sincerely hope so!
