I've had a difficult relationship with the Uncharted series in the past. The first game failed to capture my attention in any meaningful way, but then the second and third instalments kind of blew my mind - while still retaining a lot of the issues from the first game. The Last of Us managed to fix almost all of the grievances I've had with Naughty Dog's departure from the likes of Jak and Daxter and Crash Bandicoot.
But what's the one aspect of their most recent masterpiece that you'd love to see replicated in Uncharted 4 when it finally gets its release date for the PS4 in 2016? Some of its story beats? Its stealth gameplay? The depth of its characters? Has The Last of Us transformed what you want from Nathan Drake?
Uncharted 4: Learning From Naughty Dog's The Last of Us for Release Date
The two worlds of Nathan Drake, and Joel and Ellie stand in stark contrast from one another. Both are very well realised by the dedicated team at Naughty Dog, but they kind of exist at opposing ends of the spectrum. The Uncharted series is very much about blockbuster-style action sequences, coupled with smart-talking characters and historical intrigue. The last of Us is a seriously dark adventure into the depths of the human psyche and an exploration of our most basic desires and needs.
Having the world of The Last of Us influence Uncharted may sound strange, but Naughty Dog grew significantly between Uncharted 3 and their latest achievement. Uncharted 4 seemed like a much darker game as opposed to its predecessors in its first trailer. Naughty Dog have stated that they'll be delving much deeper into the character of Nathan Drake in this latest instalment, as they explore his motivations and a possibly sketchy past.
But out of everything that The Last of Us could bestow upon Uncharted 4, I'd have to say that it's its gameplay. I've always disliked Uncharted's gun mechanics - it's never felt intuitive and it's kind of annoying playing one of these games after engaging a much tighter third-person shooter. The Last of Us felt like it relinquished complete control into my hands.
But I seriously hope that Uncharted will also give me more options for how I wish to approach situations as The Last of Us did. A stealthy approach was always recommended due to the low level of supplies, but it was great to know that I could sneak around stabbing everyone or go in guns blazing whenever I wanted. I don't want to sneak around an Uncharted game, but I want to feel a lot more in control over the gunplay and the choices I want to make in combat.
But what about you guys? What do you hope to see Uncharted 4 learn from The Last of Us on its release date? Do you think Naughty Dog should make Nathan Drake's last expedition a darker one on the PS4? Let us know in the comments!
