Here are the TOP 5 Movies at the US Box Office this past weekend, these are the amounts for the normal weekend, not the four day Memorial weekend:
1)TOMORROWLAND - $32.9 Million
Brad Bird's new Sci-Fi adventure film was mysterious in its marketing and unfortunately didn't do all that well with critics, only scoring a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. I believe that Tomorrowland's marketing was at fault here, so very little information about the actual story was given out in the trailers but I thought perhaps the star power of George Clooney and Brad Bird's great reputation might have brought in a bit more Box Office.
The movie had a huge budget of $190 Million, and is unlikely that it will make a lot of profit, this might be another situation like John Carter from 2012, Disney must be disappointed with these numbers. I don't think they expected this to make $80 Million opening weekend, but a more suitable number would have been $50 and it didn't even hit that, and in such a packed summer, Tomorrowland will be lucky if it makes money. In my opinion, Tomorrowland was a lot of fun, but it was lacking in several areas, you can check out my review here. I've gone to see the film twice now and had a blast both times, I definitely recommend it.
2)PITCH PERFECT 2 - $30.8 Million
Last week's big money maker proved to be a big hit with fans and has now made $179 Million worldwide on a presumably small budget. To put this in perspective, the first film only made $115 Million worldwide in its entire run, $65 Million of that being domestically which means the sequel outdid the first films entire Domestic gross in its first weekend!
The movie received mostly positive reviews, scoring a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics. You can check out my review here.
3)MAD MAX: FURY ROAD - $24.8 Million
Mad Max opened strong on its opening weekend with $44 Million and has done pretty well in its second week, presumably from the great word of mouth that the film has received, almost every fan who saw the film has raved about it and that is equally true with critics, scoring a fantastic 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out my review here. The film now has a total of $219 Million worldwide on its $150 Million budget and will easily make more money in coming weeks, here's hoping we'll get news of a sequel pretty soon!
4)POLTERGEIST - $22.6 Million
The horror remake starring Sam Rockwell did quite horribly with critics and didn't reach that big of an audience, despite its PG-13 rating, over the weekend. Critically the movie was a flop, only scoring a very low 33% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out my review here.
5)AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
The movie of the summer hit number 5 this weekend and still made a lot of money! The superhero film raked in another $21.6 Million which brings the Worldwide total to $1.18 Billion in only 4 weeks. I wouldn't be surprised if Avengers is still in the Top 5 next weekend as Poltergeist may drop out when San Andreas opens.
