By now you have probably heard of the potential for a new Disney channel for Marvel / Star Wars content. You have probably already assumed that the channel will air Marvel and Star Wars movies reruns 24/7. I don't think that will be the case.

Disney already has Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior channels dedicated for kids; ABC Family for teenage girls and young women; ESPN for sports and ABC Network for the mainstream Americans. What they need is a channel dedicated to SciFi / Superhero / Comic Book / Supernatural shows. This would become the Disney's answer to the CW and SyFy.

This channel would air primarily Marvel and Star Wars live action shows but also include other scifi / supernatural shows from Disney. During the day, the channel would air syndicated shows just like the CW, ABC Family and any other cable channel.

CW has about 10 original shows per season (most of which are by WB). Marvel already has about 7 shows (ABC, Netflix) - Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Daredevil, AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Marvel's The Defenders. In addition, we already know that there are 2 other pending scripts for Marvel TV - Mockingbird and whatever John Ridley is working on. This gives us a total of 9 TV shows, more than enough for a cable channel.

Such a channel would take off the ratings pressure from the Marvel shows expected on a big network like ABC. Comic book and SciFi shows have to try a lot harder to appeal to the mainstream audience expected of a network. They may start as strong as Agents of SHIELD series premiere but it doesn't take a lot for the casual viewers to fade away, leaving the hardcore fans. It's not a surprise that the top comic book shows - Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, The Flash, Gotham - have now settled around 1.3 - 1.7 regardless of the network. The same will be seen with SuperGirl this coming season. These numbers may not be impressive for the big networks but CW and cable channels would die to get them. They would be gold for the Marvel / Star Wars channel.

Right now, The CW is the best place to launch superhero shows because of their target audience without the pressure to get huge ratings. However, Disney can't air their shows on the WB/DC - dominated CW. So, they need their own channel. Something different from ABC and ABC Family. The Marvel / Star Wars channel.

The channel would be a great platform to launch more Marvel, Star Wars live action series and any other scifi / supernatural shows from Disney/ABC. Hopefully, this is what Disney wants to do with the channel.
