The Last Unicorn was one of these movies I watched over and over as a child. I recently had the occasion to rewatch it and was struck by how deep, disturbing, and hilarious the movie actually is (also, '80s animation is on point. Seriously, it's like anime meets Renaissance tapestry). The movie has some pretty terrifying scenes (that boobed Harpy?!), some uncomfortable scenes (that boobed tree that wants to marry Schmendrick), and some hilariously disconcerting scenes (the pirate cat, and the wine guzzling skeleton, anyone?). The movie also has some pretty thought provoking things to say about human nature, like when Molly asks the cat why he can see Amalthea (the unicorn in her human form) for what she really is:
"No cat out of its firrrst furrr can ever be deceived by appearances, unlike human beings, who seems to enjoy it."
But, you probably wouldn't be here if you weren't already a fan of the movie, so I'll get to the good stuff. It turns out that The Last Unicorn hasn't just provoked thoughts, it's also provided inspiration to countless fan artists who have created some pretty stunning work. So, without further ado, check out some of the most beautiful tributes around.
The only thing that could possibly make this viewing experience better is listening to that tear-jerking theme song while you scroll through:
The Long Road by Jack-a-Lynn
"Is the story of the Red Bull just another of his songs? I can't leave the forest, but I must know if I'm the only unicorn left in the world. What if they're hiding together... somewhere far away? What if they're waiting for me? In need of my help?"
The Butterfly - Rubyskies
Remember this guy from the very beginning?
"'Unicorn.' Old French, 'unicorne.' Latin, 'unicornis.' Literally, one horned: 'unus,' one, and 'cornu,' a horn. A fabulous animal resembling a horse with one horn. Visible only to those who search and trust, and generally mistaken for a white mare. Unicorn."
Unicorn and Bull Editorial Illustration by Shockowaffel
"They passed down all the roads long ago. And the Red Bull ran behind them, and covered their footsteps."
I Held You by Shintychou
This is an awesome depiction of one of the scariest scenes in the movie for me. I always thought of Mama Fortuna's death as shocking and gruesome, but after seeing it again recently I understood that that's what she wanted, and this piece does a great job of showing the connection between her and the Harpy.
"Oh she'll kill me one day or another. But she will remember forever that I caught her, and I held her prisoner. So there's my immortality, hey?"
Last of the Red Hot Swamis by StressedJenny
Although Schmendrick struggled to master his powers for most of the movie, the Last of the Red Hot Swamis was able to be both humorous, profound, and caring all at the same time. Love this guy.
"It's a very rare person who is taken for what he truly is."
Madonna and Child, or Molly and the Pirate Cat by jennis233
The scene with Molly and the cat is one of my favorites!
"It would be the last unicorn that came to Molly Grue. It's all right, I forgive you."
The Last Unicorn by GENZOMAN
And here're all three of them together, with Schmendrick looking slightly more badass than in the other depiction.
Schmendrick: The magic chose the shape, not I. I am a bearer, I am a dwelling, I am a messenger...
Molly: You are an idiot!
Amalthea by baka-ouji
"But I'm always dreaming, even when I'm awake; it is never finished."
The Last Unicorn by luleiya
This is such a beautiful depiction of the unicorn's human and unicorn forms together.
Lady Amalthea by Stella B
Drown Out My Dreams by StellaB
If you're a fan of this romance then I'm sure you'll agree that this one sums up the relationship between Prince Lir (voiced by Jeff Bridges - crazy bit of trivia, I know!) and the Lady Amalthea beautifully.
