At one point, The Vampire Diaries was the top show on The CW. During its most recent season, however, the series saw some of its lowest ratings. And with Nina Dobrev's surprise announcement regarding her exit after season 6, we wouldn't blame the show runners if they decided to throw in the towel.
But as fate would have it, The CW confirmed that The Vampire Diaries will live to see a seventh season despite Dobrev's departure. In fact, executive producer Caroline Dries seems pretty confident that there's still plenty of story to be told.
During a recent interview with E! Online, Dries discussed some of the dilemmas that Damon, Stefan and the rest of the Mystic Falls gang will face in the upcoming seventh season, including who will be the the primary villain.
“At the helm of the heretics is Lily Salvatore, who is incredibly frightening because she has the ability to manipulate her sons. The conflict of season seven will become the Salvatore brothers vs. their mom and her family of heretics. It's going to be two warring factions pitted against each other.”
I'm not sure there will ever be a villain that tops Klaus (Joseph Morgan), or any of the Originals for that matter. Still, a matchup between the Salvatore brothers and their mother sounds pretty damn interesting.
