As a horror fan, I'm often disappointed by the lack of respect many film buffs have for the genre. Sure, there are plenty of disposable scary movies out there with cliche scripts and paper-thin characters, but there are also just as many (if not more) artfully made horror films full of psychological depth and real cinematic vision. Perhaps the prime example of such superlative horror would the excellent Insidious series. Starting with 2011's Insidious, the superstar Australian filmmaking team of director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell (Saw) introduced audiences to a new brand of visually stimulating horror revolving around an innocent family who find themselves besieged by evil supernatural entities after their comatose son unwittingly enters an astral plane, acting as a vessel for ghosts to enter the world of the living. The film was a smash success, and was shortly followed by 2013's equally gripping Insidious: Chapter 2, which continued to explore the creepy connection to the otherworldly "Further" realm. Now, four years after the original's release, the latest chapter of this block-busting franchise will haunt audiences when Insidious: Chapter 3 hits theaters this weekend.

After writing the first two films, Leigh Whannell will step into the director's chair for the first time to tell this prequel tale, which follows Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), powerful psychic and fan-favorite character from the first two films, as she attempts to rescue young aspiring actress Quinn (Stefanie Scott) and her doting father Sean (Dermot Mulroney).

Recently, I was lucky enough to be able to sit down with Director Whannell and stars Scott, Mulroney, and Shaye to discuss the conception, creation, and filming of Insidious: Chapter 3. I was thrilled to find that these hard-working men and women cared just as much about the horror genre as I did and were super committed to bringing this insane vision of terror to the big-screen in the best way possible, even if it meant faking a few real scares on set...
