Growing up watching horror films, I've seen a lot of movies that I feel deserve a lot more credit than they received. I'm new to Moviepilot so I decided to make my first post about those horror movies that I feel were underrated.

My list is in no particular order and comments with other underrated movies are greatly appreciated because I'm always looking for new frights!

1.) Event Horizon (1997)

Paramount Pictures
Paramount Pictures

Reasons you need to watch this movie: Space itself is a scary idea, being stranded in space on a ship with a deadly secret, even scarier. Sam Neill gives an incredible performance and is outrageously creepy. The movie is highly disturbing and packs a lot of gore which is a just an added bonus to the overall creepy vibe.

2.) Starry Eyes (2014)

Snowfort Pictures
Snowfort Pictures

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: It's amazing seeing how far some people will go to achieve their dreams of becoming a famous actor. This movie is extremely dark throughout, it has an eerie vibe, with just the right amount of gore. I would personally consider it to be a hidden horror gem.

3.) Martyrs (2008)

TCB Film
TCB Film

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: The French have been known to make great horror films and Martyrs definitely falls into that category. I went into this movie thinking it was going to be a cliche revenge film and was definitely pleasantly surprised. A lot of people think it is a little over-the-top, personally I think it is right where it should be. Not for the faint of heart, because it is pretty graphic.

4.) Trick ‘r Treat (2007)

Warner Bros.
Warner Bros.

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: It is a decently good Halloween anthology. The movie has four stories that all revolve around Halloween. The twist of the movie is pretty good as well. It is an overall entertaining movie to say the least.

5.) V/H/S & V/H/S/2 (2012/2013)

Bloody Disgusting
Bloody Disgusting

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: The V/H/S series is one of those series people either love or hate. I personally loved the first two, but yes, the third one was horrible. There is plenty of gore, a mixture of horror, and even a bit of comedy. Like the majority of anthologies, the movies have some that are better than others. If for nothing else, Safe Haven in V/H/S/2 was brilliant and is in itself worth the watch.

6.) Grave Encounters (2011)

Digital Interference Productions
Digital Interference Productions

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: Personally not a huge fan of found footage movies, not to mention this movie is clearly poking fun of Ghost Adventures, but overall it was entertaining. It has just the right amount of jump scares and the filming isn't too horribly shaky. Another good thing about this movie is unlike the majority of ghost/haunting movies, it has a decent pace throughout and doesn't wait until the last 10 minutes for something to happen.

7.) The Den (2013)

Cliffbrook Films
Cliffbrook Films

Reasons you need to watch this movie: This movie is everything Unfriended should've been. Webcam-based horror movie, but it's pretty fast paced and makes you look at random chatting sites a little closer. The movie is creepy, gory, disturbing; so, everything needed to make a solid horror movie. Plus just the thought of people being able to hack your computer through your webcam is scary enough, isn't it?

8.) You're Next (2011)

Lionsgate
Lionsgate

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: This movie is a little more known than the rest of my list, but I still feel as if it is under appreciated. With a kickass female lead, and the simplicity of the film that makes it even scarier. There is a decent level of gore. Also, the fact that they only used one song throughout (it's very catchy) makes it even better. The movie isn't over-the-top but it has enough to make it a solid horror flick.

9.) Return of the Living Dead (1985)

MGM
MGM

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: A little '80s cheesy horror never killed anybody, just characters. This movie, hands down, is one of my favorite zombie films. I am aware of how cheesy it is but that is what makes it so great. A bunch of '80s punks running around a cemetery crawling with the living dead should be enough for you to want to check out this movie.

10.) The Midnight Meat Train (2008)

Lions Gate
Lions Gate

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: This one is simple. Gore, lots and lots of gore, Bradley Cooper, more gore. I think that says it all.

11.) Vile (2011)

Tony-Seven Films
Tony-Seven Films

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: Vile is a movie along the lines of the Saw franchise. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone who isn't a fan of the torture genre because that is pretty much all this is. The reason I added this to the list is because this movie takes a much more subtle approach to the torture, which I think makes it stand out quite a bit. No big traps or contraptions, it is all small but extremely painful torture that will make you cringe endlessly.

12.) The Descent (2005)

Lions Gate
Lions Gate

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: I wasn't going to add this movie to my list for the simple fact that I didn't think it was underrated, but then much to my surprise, I found out a lot of people haven't actually watched it. The Descent is a solid horror film. It's dark, and just creepy as hell. Not to mention being trapped in a cave is fucking terrifying.

13.) American Mary (2012)

IndustryWorks Pictures
IndustryWorks Pictures

Reasons why you need to watch this movie: This movie has an overall creepy, yet sexy vibe. It's a painfully gory movie, many people would classify it under the torture genre even. It has a perfect level of torment for the movie and seeing some of the different body modifications makes it a little more interesting.
